FollowMyHealth 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
FollowMyHealth is a patient portal. Through it you read your medical records and test results, message your doctors, request refills and pay bills. Many clinics and hospitals run it under their own name, so your portal may look different while using the same system (FollowMyHealth). Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional. When you turn it on, FollowMyHealth lets you get the verification code by email, by text message, or from an authenticator app (FollowMyHealth). This guide covers the app option with Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the FollowMyHealth steps come from FollowMyHealth's own help articles, including their screenshots. Its current help center at followmyhealth.my.site.com only shows articles with JavaScript, so on October 21, 2026 we read the earlier versions of the same articles as archived copies on web.archive.org, saved in 2023. The help center lists the setup article as updated on September 24, 2026, and we couldn't read that version. We haven't tested the steps on a FollowMyHealth account, so a label may differ. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Which sign-in this is for
FollowMyHealth's 2FA setting belongs to FMH Secure Login, its own username and password (the green shield icon at sign-up) (FollowMyHealth). Some people sign in with an outside account instead, such as Apple, Google, Facebook, Yahoo or Microsoft. In that case FollowMyHealth's help points you to that provider's own 2-step verification (FollowMyHealth).
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
The setup article gives this path (FollowMyHealth). It's written for the website on a computer.
- Sign in to FollowMyHealth.
- Open My Account at the top of the page and choose Preferences.
- Expand Sign In Preferences. (The article's text says "Sign-in Preferences"; its screenshot shows the label without the hyphen.)
- Select the Two-factor Authentication row. A window titled Two-Factor Authentication opens.
- Under How would you like to receive your verification code?, pick App from the menu. The other choices are Text Message, Email and None.
- FollowMyHealth shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it.
- Click Continue so FollowMyHealth can check that your app is synced. The archived article stops here and doesn't show the next screen. Expect to type the current 6-digit code from Novaz.
The setup window names Google and Microsoft Authenticator as examples, but any authenticator app that scans QR codes will do.
No typed key in the help
The screenshot of the App step shows only the QR code, with no text key or "can't scan" link. FollowMyHealth's help doesn't mention one either. If you're setting this up on the same iPhone that runs Novaz, take a screenshot of the QR code, then in Novaz tap + and Choose a photo. See How to scan a 2FA QR code on the same iPhone. Delete the screenshot afterward, since anyone with it can make your codes.
When you'll need a code
The setup window says a new code is needed each time you log in. A separate article confirms that with 2FA on, FollowMyHealth asks for your username, password and code at every sign-in, and that Remember me on this device wasn't available for this in the mobile app at the time (FollowMyHealth). That article is from 2020, so the app may handle it differently now.
If FollowMyHealth rejects your code
Be careful with retries. FollowMyHealth allows 3 tries at the code and 3 requests to resend it. After that, sign-in is blocked for 5 minutes, and you get an email titled "Unusual Account Activity Alert" (FollowMyHealth). A second article also caps code requests at 3 in 24 hours, unless you contact support or wait 5 minutes (FollowMyHealth).
Before you try again, check your iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
No backup codes
FollowMyHealth's help doesn't mention backup or recovery codes. The fallback it describes is a link at the code prompt, Use different two-factor authentication, which offers other ways to get a code (FollowMyHealth). Those are the email address and mobile number on your account. Keep both current: they are your way back in if your iPhone is gone.
If you lose your authenticator
- At the code prompt, click Use different two-factor authentication and have the code sent by email or text.
- If none of the options work, choose I don't see an option that will work. FollowMyHealth then says it can't sign you in, and its help tells you to contact support. An agent helps you back in and updates your 2FA settings (FollowMyHealth, FollowMyHealth).
The current help center has a page for submitting a support ticket (FollowMyHealth). The help doesn't say what proof support asks for to unlock 2FA or how long it takes. Your clinic may also run its own patient support line. See also Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Changing phones
FollowMyHealth's help doesn't cover moving the app to a new phone. If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, restore it on the new iPhone and the codes keep working. Without one, add FollowMyHealth on the new iPhone from a fresh QR code. The Two-Factor Authentication window is where you change your method. Do this while you can still sign in, and keep the old phone until it's done. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
Turning 2FA off
In the same Two-Factor Authentication window, choose None and click Save. Sign-in then goes back to username and password only (FollowMyHealth). After that, open the entry in Novaz and tap Remove account.
