GreenGeeks 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
Your GreenGeeks account is the login for the web host's dashboard: websites, billing, support tickets and cPanel access. Two-factor authentication (2FA) on it is optional, and the only method GreenGeeks describes is a code from an authenticator app on your phone. GreenGeeks names a few apps but expects others to work too (GreenGeeks).
Two things set GreenGeeks apart: with 2FA on, you need your authenticator to get the support PIN that staff ask for, and you can add two security questions as a recovery fallback. The steps use Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the GreenGeeks steps come from GreenGeeks's own support articles, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a GreenGeeks account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
GreenGeeks's article was updated in February 2026, but its screenshots date from 2020, so screens may differ (GreenGeeks).
- Log in to GreenGeeks. Click your profile information in the top-right corner, then My Profile in the drop-down.
- Open the Security tab. A newer GreenGeeks article calls this page Account Security (GreenGeeks).
- Click Enable Two-Factor Security. A Two-factor Enrollment window opens with a QR code.
- In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the code. If you're on your iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Type the 6-digit code from Novaz into the Code box.
- Read the disclaimer, check the I understand box, and click Enable.
- GreenGeeks then shows your recovery codes. Save them before you leave the page (next section).
The article doesn't mention a text key to type instead, and its screenshot shows only the QR code, so plan to scan it.
Save the recovery codes
The recovery codes let you log in if your phone is lost or broken, so store them where you can still reach them then (GreenGeeks). The article doesn't say how many codes you get or whether you can make new ones later.
Keep these codes even if you use Novaz's iCloud backup or a backup file: they get you in if the phone is gone and the backup is missing or doesn't include GreenGeeks. Keep them in a password manager or on paper, away from the phone. More in 2FA backup codes.
Add the two security questions
After 2FA is on, a new section shows up on the Security tab. Under Change Security Question, pick a question from the drop-down menu and type your answer, then do the same for the second question and click Save Answers (GreenGeeks).
GreenGeeks says these answers can help you recover the account if you lose your phone and don't have your recovery codes. Write the answers down exactly as you typed them.
The support PIN depends on your authenticator
GreenGeeks staff may ask for a support PIN, which you find in the profile drop-down after logging in; it changes every time the page loads (GreenGeeks). The setup disclaimer warns that with 2FA on, you need your authenticator to get that PIN, and that recovery is limited without the authenticator or your security answers.
When GreenGeeks asks for a code
Every time you log in to GreenGeeks, after your password (GreenGeeks). The article doesn't mention a way to trust a device and skip the code.
If GreenGeeks rejects your code
GreenGeeks's help doesn't cover rejected codes. Most of the time the iPhone's clock is off: go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. For other causes, see Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
GreenGeeks doesn't describe moving 2FA to a new phone. The practical route, using steps it does document, is to turn 2FA off while you still have the old phone and set it up again with the new one. Turning it off deletes your security questions, so add them again, and save the new recovery codes. With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can skip all that and restore your accounts on the new iPhone. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
- Use a recovery code. When you log in, enter one of the recovery codes in place of the authenticator code. This is the route GreenGeeks's 2FA article gives for a lost or broken phone (GreenGeeks).
- Use your security questions. If you set them up, GreenGeeks says they can help recover the account when you have neither the phone nor the codes. The article doesn't describe how that recovery works step by step.
- Contact GreenGeeks. Tickets need a login, so if you're locked out, use live chat (24/7) or phone support (9 am to midnight Eastern) (GreenGeeks). Its support PIN article says staff can verify you by other means if you can't log in, without mentioning 2FA (GreenGeeks). GreenGeeks doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long it takes.

Turning 2FA off
On the Security tab, click Disable Two-Factor Security, enter the code from your authenticator app, and click Disable. This also removes your security questions. It needs a working code (GreenGeeks). Then open GreenGeeks in Novaz and tap Remove account.
