University of Delaware 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
At the University of Delaware, two-factor authentication (2FA) guards your UDelNet account whenever you sign in through CAS, the central login page for UDSIS, UD Workforce, your UD Google account and the UD VPN (UD). Faculty and staff must use it (UD). Codes can come from an authenticator app, a text or voice call, or a fob sold at the UD Bookstore (UD).
UD's help names Microsoft and Google Authenticator, but its QR code is a standard one that Microsoft's app adds as a personal account, so other apps can scan it too (UD). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone; any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the University of Delaware steps come from UD's own IT help articles, linked below, which we read on October 20, 2026. We haven't tested them on a UD account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Two systems, two entries
UD has two separate systems (UD). This guide covers UD 2FA, managed in My UD Settings, for everything behind CAS. Microsoft MFA covers Office, Outlook and Teams; for a non-Microsoft app, UD's steps use I want to use a different authenticator app (UD). Each has its own QR code, so you may get two UD entries in your app.
Turn on UD 2FA with an authenticator app
UD's newest setup article, updated in June 2026, describes these steps on a computer (UD):
- Sign in to My UD Settings.
- In the Authenticator App section, skip the Microsoft Authenticator download if you use Novaz. Step 3 on the page shows a QR code.
- In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen.
- On the computer, answer Is your authenticator app set-up complete with Yes, I'm receiving 2FA codes.
- Add a backup method: a UD fob, a US phone number, or a non-UD email address (students only). Click Next step.
- Choose Authenticator app as your primary method, verify it with the code from Novaz, and click Next step.
- Print the emergency codes, then click Finish & submit.
- Under My account information, check for You are enrolled in two-factor authentication.
Older UD articles use slightly different labels. UD emails you whenever your 2FA settings change (UD).
UD's setup articles only describe scanning, but its page on pseudo accounts lists Manually enter code as a configuration method (UD). If you get a key that way, tap + in Novaz, then Enter key manually, and type it as the Setup key (setup keys explained). UD's codes are six digits and change every 30 seconds (UD), which is what Novaz makes from a typed key.
Switching from text or voice? In My UD Settings, click Change my two-factor authentication (2FA), add an authenticator in the 2FA methods section, then use Change primary method to pick Authenticator app (recommended), click Save, and confirm with Verify code (UD).
Emergency codes and backup phones
Enrollment gives you ten emergency codes. Each works once, and they don't expire (UD). If you skipped printing them, they're under Change my two-factor authentication (2FA), where you can also get a new list (UD). Without a Novaz backup (iCloud backup or a backup file), the keys exist only on your iPhone, so keep these codes safe as your way back in. See 2FA backup codes.
UD's overview also requires at least one US phone number as a backup (UD). Text and voice codes only reach US numbers (UD), so abroad you'll rely on the app and the printed codes. UD notes that an authenticator app needs no Wi-Fi or cell signal (UD).
When UD asks for a code
On CAS, a second screen asks for the code after your password. Ticking Remember this browser skips it for several days on that browser; UD advises this only on devices nobody else uses (UD). On the VPN, pick the UDEL-VPN group and enter the code as the Second Password (UD).
If UD rejects your code
UD's advice: type only the six digits, with no spaces (UD), and let your device set its time automatically instead of entering it by hand (UD). On iPhone: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off.
One UD quirk: after you activate a UD fob, the authenticator app has to be reconfigured with Edit Google Authenticator (UD). More causes in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
UD doesn't give phone-switching steps. Its app article says that if you've set an app up before, you may need Edit Authenticator app in My UD Settings (UD). Do it while the old phone still works. If you back up Novaz, you can also restore your accounts on the new iPhone from iCloud backup or a backup file, and the codes keep working. See moving to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
On the CAS code screen, click Don't have your default device?, choose a backup phone, and click Send code (UD). For the VPN, typing sms1 or voice1 as the Second Password has a code sent to the first text or voice number you listed (UD). An emergency code also works. Once you're in, update your methods in My UD Settings.
With no backup left, UD points you to your department's or college's IT staff or the IT Support Center (UD). It doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long that takes, and its help doesn't describe turning 2FA off. See Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
