Kahoot! 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5

Your Kahoot! account is the one teachers, trainers and companies use to build kahoots, host live games and keep reports. Kahoot! calls its two-step sign-in multi-factor authentication (MFA), and its Kahoot! 360 newsletter for the fourth quarter of 2025 announced it as live for all users (Kahoot!). It's optional. The only second factor Kahoot!'s help describes is an authenticator app, with backup codes as the fallback.
The steps below use Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Kahoot! steps come from Kahoot!'s own help center, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Kahoot! account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
Kahoot!'s MFA article lists these steps (Kahoot!):
- Log in to your Kahoot! account on the web.
- Click your avatar in the top right corner and choose Profile settings. Kahoot!'s account settings article puts the switch on a tab called Change password & multi-factor authentication (Kahoot!).
- Click Turn on multi-factor authentication. A pop-up opens with a QR code.
- In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the code. If you're reading the pop-up on your iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- If scanning doesn't work, Kahoot! also offers a setup key. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, and paste it into Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Type the 6-digit code from Novaz into the field in the pop-up.
- Download the backup codes Kahoot! gives you.
The help article doesn't say how often the codes change, so scanning the QR code is the safer choice: it carries the code settings to your app.
Save the backup codes
The backup codes are the one way back in that Kahoot! lets you use on your own. Download them during setup and store them away from your phone, in a password manager or on paper. They still matter with Novaz: unless you've turned on iCloud backup or kept a backup file, its keys exist only on your iPhone. Kahoot!'s help doesn't say how many codes you get, whether each works once, or how to make new ones. More in 2FA backup codes.
Signing in afterwards
Once MFA is on, Kahoot! asks for a code from your authenticator app each time you log in. You can tick Don't ask again on this device to skip it on a computer you trust. To use a backup code, click Try another way on the code screen (Kahoot!).
Don't mix this up with Kahoot!'s email check. When you log in from a new device or browser, or in a private window, Kahoot! may also send a verification code to your email address (Kahoot!). That one comes from your inbox, not from Novaz.
You can also sign in to Kahoot! with Google, Microsoft, Apple or Clever, or with a company's Single Sign-On (Kahoot!). Kahoot!'s MFA article doesn't say whether its own authenticator step applies to those sign-ins. If you use one of them, protect that account with 2FA as well.
If Kahoot! rejects your code
Kahoot!'s help doesn't cover rejected codes. Most of the time the iPhone's clock is off: go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones or turning it off
Kahoot!'s account settings article says you can switch two-factor authentication on or off from Profile settings, though it doesn't show the steps for turning it off (Kahoot!). No Kahoot! page describes moving it to a new phone. With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you restore Kahoot! on the new iPhone with your other accounts; without one, a new phone means setting Kahoot! up again while you can still sign in with the old one. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Use a backup code through Try another way. If you've lost both the app and the backup codes, Kahoot! says your account isn't gone: contact its customer support team from the email address linked to your account. Support uses that address to check it's you, then helps you back in and resets your MFA settings (Kahoot!). Kahoot! doesn't say what else it may ask for or how long this takes.
