Onet Poczta 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Onet Poczta is the free email service of the Polish portal Onet. You sign in with an Onet Konto, which older help pages call O!Konto, the sign-in platform behind Onet Poczta and other Onet services (Onet Poczta). Its optional two-factor authentication (2FA), weryfikacja dwuetapowa (two-step verification), follows your password with a code from an authenticator app or a U2F security key (Onet Poczta). Onet's help doesn't list text messages as a second step; it mentions SMS only for password resets (Onet Poczta).

Onet suggests Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and 2FAS as popular options, not as the only ones (Onet Poczta). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Onet Poczta steps come from Onet's own help center (Pomoc Onet Poczta), linked below, which we read on October 20, 2026. The help is in Polish only, so the English in parentheses is our translation. The pages date from 2021 to 2025 and their screenshots don't all match, so what you see may differ slightly. We haven't tested the steps on an Onet account. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

First, if you use Outlook or Thunderbird

Onet says you need app passwords if you use 2FA and also read your mail in a mail program (Onet Poczta). You make them on the Bezpieczeństwo (Security) tab of Onet Konto, in the Hasła do aplikacji (App passwords) card, under ZARZĄDZAJ HASŁAMI (Manage passwords). Deleting one cuts that program off from your account.

The setup window in Onet's screenshot adds that, with 2FA on, the account works only in a web browser (Onet Poczta). Onet's help doesn't say how its own Onet Poczta app for iPhone and Android handles 2FA.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

  1. Sign in to Onet Konto and open the Bezpieczeństwo tab or Kontrola bezpieczeństwa (Security checkup). Find Weryfikacja dwuetapowa (Onet Poczta). The direct address is konto.onet.pl/multi-factor-authentication (Onet Poczta).
  2. Onet's newest screenshot, from October 2024, shows a switch for each method. Turn on Aplikacja uwierzytelniająca (Authenticator app) (Onet Poczta). Onet's step-by-step page still uses the older labels APLIKACJA MOBILNA (Mobile app) and Włącz (Turn on) (Onet Poczta).
  3. A window called Aplikacja mobilna shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code. If the code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use + > Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  4. Can't scan it? The key is printed to the right of the QR code, with no special name. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, type Onet as the Service and type the key as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  5. Click DALEJ (Next). Type the 6-digit code from Novaz into Wpisz kod (Enter code) and click DALEJ again.
  6. Onet confirms with WERYFIKACJA DWUETAPOWA ZOSTAŁA WŁĄCZONA (Two-step verification is on) and lists your backup codes. Save them, then click ZAMKNIJ (Close).

Onet's help mentions 6 digits but not how often the code changes. Scanning the QR code is the safer choice, because it hands those settings to your app.

Keep the backup codes

Those single-use kody awaryjne (emergency codes) get you in when the app can't. Onet says to store them safely and not to confuse them with the app's codes (Onet Poczta). If the phone is lost and you have no current Novaz backup, these codes are your fallback. Onet's help doesn't explain how to get a fresh set. More in 2FA backup codes.

When Onet asks for a code

At every sign-in, after your password. Without the app code or a backup code, you can't open your mail (Onet Poczta). The help mentions no way to trust a device, and doesn't say whether signing in with a passkey (klucz dostępu), managed on the same page, skips the code (Onet Poczta).

If Onet rejects your code

Onet's help says nothing about rejected codes. Start with the iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Moving to a new iPhone

With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone and the codes keep working (how to move to a new iPhone). Without one, note that Onet says that turning 2FA on again means adding the account to your app again (Onet Poczta). So, while the old phone still works, switch the method off and on again, and scan the new QR code with Novaz on the new iPhone. Keep any new backup codes Onet shows. On the old iPhone, open the Onet entry and tap Remove account.

If you lose your authenticator

Use a backup code. Without one, Onet's route is the Formularz przywracania dostępu do konta (account access recovery form), built for password problems but with a box that turns off 2FA (Onet Poczta):

  1. On the sign-in page, click Nie pamiętam hasła (I forgot my password), enter your address and pick the form from the list of methods.
  2. Upload a copy of an ID document that shows only your name, sex, date of birth and the document's expiry date. Cover everything else, including the photo. The file can be up to 3 MB.
  3. Enter your details. If they don't match your Onet Konto profile, Onet rejects the request.
  4. Add a phone number or backup email for the account, tick WYŁĄCZENIE WERYFIKACJI DWUETAPOWEJ (2FA) (Turn off two-step verification), tick the declaration, and click WYŚLIJ (Send).

Onet replies by email. It gives no time frame; it depends on the queue.

Because the check uses your profile, fill it in now: Kontrola bezpieczeństwa suggests a recovery phone or email, your date of birth and place of residence (Onet Poczta). Turning 2FA off

Switch Aplikacja uwierzytelniająca off on the same Weryfikacja dwuetapowa page (Onet Poczta), and delete app passwords you no longer need.
