Practice Better is practice management software for health and wellness practitioners, so your account holds client health information, and Practice Better itself lists 2FA among the steps that help with HIPAA and similar rules (Practice Better). Its two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional and works with one method: a 6-digit code from an authenticator app, asked for after your password (Practice Better). Its help mentions no text-message option. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Practice Better steps come from Practice Better's own help center, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. The help center's web pages refused our automated requests, so we read the same articles through the help center's public article feed. We haven't tested the steps on a Practice Better account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Before you start: how you sign in matters

Practice Better's 2FA only covers the email-and-password sign-in. If you sign in with Google, Practice Better suggests turning on 2-Step Verification in your Google account instead (Practice Better). Sign in with Apple and passkeys are other options it offers, and you can keep several sign-in methods on one account (Practice Better). The help pages don't say whether the authenticator code is also asked for when you use one of those.

Practice Better's article names Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and the Passwords app on iPhone as examples. Any of them, or Novaz, can hold the code. If you're weighing Apple Passwords against a separate app, see Apple Passwords vs. an authenticator app.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Practice Better's help describes these steps (Practice Better):

  1. In your Practice Better portal, open Settings, then Login Options. Other Practice Better articles reach the same page through All Settings & Preferences or View All Settings, so the path may look slightly different for you.
  2. Click Set up next to Two-factor Authentication.
  3. Practice Better emails you a verification code first. Type it into the portal.
  4. A pop-up shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen. If you're doing this on your iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  5. Type the 6-digit code from Novaz into the pop-up to finish.

The new entry is named Practice Better, followed by your sign-in email address.

Can't scan the code? A 2023 release note says Practice Better added a way to set up 2FA manually with a setup key (Practice Better). The current article doesn't name the link or button for it. If you find the key, in Novaz tap +, then Enter key manually, and paste it into Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key? The help doesn't say how often the codes change, so scanning is safer.

Save the backup codes

Right after setup, Practice Better asks you to download a list of one-time backup codes, and its help tells you to print them and keep them somewhere secure (Practice Better). If that phone is gone and there's no Novaz backup to restore, these codes are what gets you in.

To use one, choose Use backup code on the two-factor screen when you sign in. To see your codes again or make a fresh list, go to Settings > Login Options, open the More Options menu (3 dots) and choose Get backup codes. More on keeping them safe in 2FA backup codes.

When Practice Better asks for a code

By default, every time you sign in. On the code screen you can turn on the trust option before you enter a code, and Practice Better then skips 2FA on that device for 30 days. The trust is tied to the browser, so signing in with Firefox on a laptop you trusted in Chrome still asks for a code. You can delete the list of trusted devices from the same More Options menu on Login Options (Practice Better).

If Practice Better rejects your code

Practice Better's help doesn't cover rejected authenticator codes. Make sure you're typing the code from your authenticator app, not the email code from setup. Then check the iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

Practice Better's help doesn't describe moving 2FA to a new phone. With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you restore your accounts on the new iPhone. Without one, keep the old phone and your backup codes until you've set Practice Better up again on the new one. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

Sign in with your password, choose Use backup code, and enter one of your saved codes. Once you're in, set up 2FA again with your new phone and get a new list of backup codes.

Without backup codes, the help pages don't describe a reset. Practice Better's support team answers through the chat icon on its help center, where a human agent can be reached through the AI chat, and replies come by email from help@practicebetter.io, usually 9 am to 5 pm Eastern (Practice Better). Practice Better doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long a reset takes. More help in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Practice Better's help doesn't describe how to turn 2FA off.
