TikTok 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
TikTok's name for two-factor authentication is 2-step verification, or 2SV. It guards the account behind your TikTok profile, posts and messages. A regular account doesn't have to use it, but TikTok strongly recommends it (TikTok). Two things are unusual. TikTok's help describes the setting only in its app, not on the website. And one method isn't enough: you pick at least two from Phone, Email, Authenticator and Password (TikTok).
This guide adds TikTok to Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the TikTok steps come from TikTok's own help pages, linked below, which we read on October 20, 2026. We haven't tested them on a TikTok account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
TikTok's two help pages on 2-step verification give the same path (TikTok, TikTok):
- Update the TikTok app to its latest version.
- Tap Profile at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top, then Settings and privacy.
- Tap Security & permissions, then 2-step verification.
- Choose at least two methods, with Authenticator as one of them.
- TikTok's next screen shows a QR code and a key you can copy. Add either one to Novaz (see below).
- Back in TikTok, type the code Novaz shows.
- Confirm with Turn on. If you also chose Phone or Email, TikTok sends a code there for you to enter.
The two pages word the phone and email step differently (Continue or Send code), so labels may differ. Security checkup, in the same menu, also links to 2-step verification (TikTok).
Getting the key into Novaz on the same iPhone
Because setup happens in the TikTok app, the QR code is usually on the phone you'd scan it with. Two ways around that:
- Copy the key. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, type TikTok as the Service, and paste the key into Setup key. Account is optional. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Screenshot the QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Choose a photo, and pick the screenshot. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone. Delete it afterwards: anyone with it can make your codes.
If TikTok is open on another device, such as an iPad, tap +, then Scan QR code in Novaz instead.
TikTok's help doesn't say how many digits its codes have or how often they change. A key typed into Novaz always gives 6 digits every 30 seconds, while a QR code carries the service's own settings. If TikTok turns down codes from a pasted key, open that entry in Novaz, tap Remove account, and add it again from a screenshot.
Save the recovery code
TikTok hands you a recovery code when you set up the authenticator (TikTok). If you lose the phone and have no Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, this code is your way back in. Keep a copy somewhere other than that iPhone, such as on paper or in a password manager. See 2FA backup codes.
TikTok's page calls this code a "Time-based One-time password (TOTP)", but it isn't the changing code in Novaz. It's the one you keep.
When TikTok asks for a code
TikTok asks when you sign in from a new or unfamiliar device, using one of the methods you chose. After entering a code, you can have it remember a device you use often. Review those under Security & permissions > Manage devices, and tap Delete on any you don't recognize (TikTok).
With 2SV on, TikTok also blocks password resets from a device you've never signed in on. Reset from a device you've used before, or tap Forgot password?, then Recover account, on the login screen (TikTok).
If TikTok rejects your code
TikTok's help doesn't cover rejected authenticator codes. Check your iPhone's clock first: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
If you lose your authenticator
TikTok calls this resetting your authentication method (TikTok):
- In the TikTok app, tap Can't access the app.
- Enter your recovery code. If it's correct, TikTok takes you to the settings page.
- Follow TikTok's steps there to reset the method.
Lost the recovery code too? Tap Need more help? and give the details TikTok asks for to confirm who you are. TikTok doesn't list them, and says this can take up to 30 days.
TikTok also lets at least two TikTok friends vouch for you, from Help > Recover your account, but doesn't say whether that gets you past a missing authenticator. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Changing phones or turning it off
TikTok's help doesn't explain how to move the authenticator to a new phone, or how to turn 2-step verification off. On the Novaz side, an iCloud backup or backup file lets you restore your accounts on the new iPhone (how to move to a new iPhone). Before you give up the old iPhone, make sure your recovery code is saved: the reset above, which starts from it, is the only route TikTok documents.
TikTok Ads Manager is separate
TikTok Ads Manager, for advertisers, has its own 2-step verification under User settings > Account Security, with Authenticator App among the choices (TikTok).
