CoinTracker 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
CoinTracker is a crypto portfolio and tax tracker: you connect exchanges and wallets, and it builds your transaction history and tax reports. That makes the account a map of your holdings, even though CoinTracker says it doesn't hold anyone's crypto (CoinTracker). Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional, and there's only one kind: a code from an authenticator app. CoinTracker doesn't send codes by text or email (CoinTracker). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any app that makes time-based codes works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the CoinTracker steps come from CoinTracker's own help center, linked below, which we read on October 22, 2026. The help center blocked automated access to its web pages, so we read the same articles through its public article feed on support.cointracker.com. We haven't tested them on a CoinTracker account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Before you start
Two things are worth knowing up front:
- You get one recovery code, not a list. It's shown once during setup. Each time you use it, CoinTracker gives you a new one to replace it (CoinTracker).
- Support can't always help. Without the app and the recovery code, CoinTracker says a reset isn't possible in every case, and you might have to start over with a new account.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
CoinTracker's setup article describes these steps on the website (CoinTracker):
- Sign in to CoinTracker.
- Select Account at the bottom left of the page, then Settings.
- On the Account tab, switch on the two-factor authentication setting.
- Select Enable.
- CoinTracker shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If you're looking at CoinTracker on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Type the code Novaz shows and select Continue.
- Select Copy code to copy your recovery code, and save it somewhere safe.
- Tick the confirmation box and select Continue.
The article only mentions the QR code. It doesn't say whether CoinTracker also shows a text key you can type in. If you do find one, you can add it in Novaz with +, then Enter key manually, putting it in Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
Your recovery code
CoinTracker is blunt about this code: it's your only way back in if you lose your authenticator, and CoinTracker can't recover it for you. It suggests a password manager as a good place for it (CoinTracker).
Without iCloud backup or a backup file, Novaz keeps its keys only on that iPhone, and a backup can be out of date, so this code is your fallback. Keep it off that phone. Because the code changes every time you use it, update your saved copy right away, or the old one will be useless next time. More in 2FA backup codes.
To sign in with it (CoinTracker):
- At the Verify your identity prompt, click Try another method.
- Select Recovery code, enter it, and click Continue.
- Click Copy code to copy the new recovery code CoinTracker shows, and store it.
- Tick the box and click Continue.
Signing in afterwards
The next time you sign in, CoinTracker asks you to verify your identity with a code from your app. Its help doesn't say whether it asks again on every sign-in or remembers trusted devices.
After the code, you may be offered fingerprint or face sign-in (biometrics). That's a separate option, set up only during sign-in, and limited to one phone, one tablet and one computer (CoinTracker). It doesn't replace your authenticator.
If CoinTracker rejects your code
CoinTracker's help doesn't cover rejected codes. The common cause is the iPhone's clock. Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz shows a warning when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
CoinTracker's help doesn't describe moving 2FA to a new phone or turning it off and on again. If you use iCloud backup or a backup file in Novaz, restore your accounts on the new iPhone and CoinTracker's codes keep working. Without one, keep the old phone working until you've signed in on the new one and can see what CoinTracker offers in Settings. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Use the recovery code first, as above. If you don't have it, you can ask CoinTracker Support for a 2FA reset. Expect a long list of questions, including (CoinTracker):
- your account email, plus the year and exact date the account was created;
- your last known sign-in location and the date of your last successful sign-in;
- your largest exchanges or wallets, and your three most recent transactions;
- public addresses of any NFTs in the account;
- on a paid plan, payment details such as the card type and last four digits, receipt numbers and billing address.
Gather these before you write. If you can't sign in, email support@cointracker.com. When you're signed in, the chat helper Chatoshi is under Account > Chat with support (CoinTracker). CoinTracker doesn't say how long a reset takes, only that response times depend on your plan and on demand. See also Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
