Engine Yard is a platform as a service (PaaS) for deploying and running web applications. One sign-in at login.engineyard.com covers both Engine Yard Cloud and Engine Yard Kontainers. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional: Engine Yard doesn't enforce it, and you can switch it on whenever you like (Engine Yard). Once it's on, you type a code from an authenticator app after your password.

Engine Yard's help describes one method only, an authenticator app, and its article is short, so this guide also points out what it leaves unsaid. We use Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone in the steps. Any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Engine Yard steps come from Engine Yard's own help center at support.engineyard.com, linked below, which we read on October 22, 2026. The two-factor article there was last updated in April 2025. We haven't tested the steps on an Engine Yard account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

The setting isn't in your Engine Yard dashboard. It has its own page on the sign-in site (Engine Yard):

  1. Sign in at login.engineyard.com with your email and password.
  2. While you're signed in, go to login.engineyard.com/two_factor.
  3. Click Enable two-factor authentication.
  4. Engine Yard then walks you through adding the account to your app. Its article doesn't describe these screens. If you see a QR code, open Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the code is on the same iPhone you're using, take a screenshot and tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  5. If you get a text key instead, tap +, then Enter key manually in Novaz. Fill in Service (for example, Engine Yard), Account if you like, and paste the key into Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  6. Finish the steps Engine Yard shows, which may ask you for the current code from Novaz.

Engine Yard's help doesn't say whether it shows a text key, or how many digits its codes have and how often they change. Scanning the QR code is the safer choice, because it tells Novaz the exact code settings. A key typed by hand always gets 6 digits every 30 seconds.

Engine Yard also suggests protecting the authenticator app itself from anyone who picks up your phone. At the very least, keep a passcode on your iPhone.

Signing in afterwards

From your next sign-in on, Engine Yard asks for a code after your password, every time (Engine Yard). Its help doesn't mention a "trusted device" option that skips the code.

No backup codes in the help

Engine Yard's article doesn't mention backup or recovery codes at all. Its own answer to a lost phone is a second device: it suggests an app that syncs across devices, or adding the account to more than one authenticator. With Novaz, the closest match is a backup: turn on iCloud backup (PRO) or save a password-protected file with Export to file…, both under Settings > Backup. A second authenticator works too.

To add one, sign in, go to login.engineyard.com/two_factor and click Add an authenticator, then follow the steps on the new device (Engine Yard).

If Engine Yard rejects your code

Engine Yard's help doesn't cover rejected codes. The most common cause is a phone clock that's slightly off. On iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Moving to a new iPhone

With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you restore your accounts on the new iPhone and the Engine Yard codes keep working. Without one, switch while you still have the old phone: sign in with a code from the old phone, add the new phone with Add an authenticator, and check that the new phone's code works before you wipe the old one. Engine Yard's article doesn't say whether you can remove a single authenticator later. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

If you added a second authenticator, use it to sign in, then add a replacement with Add an authenticator.

If you have no device left, you need Engine Yard Support to turn off or reset 2FA on your user. The route depends on whether anyone else is on your account (Engine Yard):

  • Other people on your Engine Yard account: another user, ideally an account owner, opens a support ticket asking Support to disable or reset 2FA for you.
  • You're the only user: open the ticket yourself, and Support works with you to confirm it's you before making the change.

Engine Yard doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long a reset takes. Tickets start from Start a conversation on support.engineyard.com. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

While you still have your authenticator, sign in, go to login.engineyard.com/two_factor and click Disable two-factor authentication (Engine Yard). Then open the entry in Novaz and tap Remove account. Without your authenticator, use the Support route above.
