Mailo is a French email provider. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional. When it's on, Mailo asks for a 6-digit code whenever you sign in from a device it doesn't know yet (Mailo). You get that code from one of two places: the Mailo app itself, or any authenticator app you like (Mailo). This guide covers the second option, using Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Other authenticator apps work the same way.

Before you start: 2FA can only be switched on from Mailo's web interface, not the Mailo app, and Mailo's help mentions no backup codes. Your way back in is a device you've already trusted.

How we checked this guide: the Mailo steps come from Mailo's own documentation and its FAQ, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. The step-by-step FAQ is in French, so the labels below are Mailo's French ones, with the English documentation's wording where it has one. We haven't tested them on a Mailo account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Sign in to Mailo in a web browser, on a computer or on your phone. Then (Mailo, Mailo):

  1. Open Options. On a computer it's at the top right; on the mobile site, open the menu first.
  2. Go to the security page (Sécurité in French, Security in English).
  3. In the two-factor authentication section (Double authentification), click Configurer (Configure) and follow the instructions.
  4. When Mailo asks which app you'll use for codes, choose the third-party 2FA app option rather than the Mailo app.
  5. Mailo shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If you're doing this in Safari on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  6. Novaz now shows a 6-digit code for Mailo. Type it into the Mailo page, enter your Mailo password, and confirm (Mailo).

Mailo's pages only describe the QR code and don't mention a key to type. If your screen shows one, Novaz can take it through + > Enter key manually. See What is a 2FA setup key?

Trusted devices and when Mailo asks for a code

When you sign in on a new device, Mailo asks for a code and offers a checkbox, Ajouter cet appareil à la liste des appareils de confiance (add this device to the list of trusted devices). Leave it ticked and that device won't be asked again (Mailo).

To see or prune that list, go back to Options > Sécurité and open the Double authentification section. Each device has a Supprimer (delete) icon at the end of its row.

If Mailo asks for a code every time on the same browser, the browser is blocking or clearing the cookie Mailo uses to recognize it. Allow cookies for mailo.com and keep them between sessions. Private windows are never remembered (Mailo).

Your mail programs aren't covered

2FA protects Mailo on the web, but not access by mail programs over protocols such as IMAP (Mailo). To close that gap, open Options > Synchronisation > Protocoles de synchronisation and turn off what you don't use. For the rest, create app passwords under Options > Sécurité > Mots de passe d'application and set each protocol to Activé avec mots de passe d'application, which refuses your main password (Mailo).

If Mailo rejects your code

Mailo's help doesn't cover rejected codes. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock: open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

Do this from a trusted device before you give up the old phone. In Options > Sécurité > Double authentification > Configurer, choose the option to show the QR code again, enter your password, and scan it with Novaz on the new iPhone (Mailo). If you keep a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore it on the new iPhone instead of scanning again. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

A lost phone or a deleted code app can lock you out of new devices. Mailo's fix is to sign in on a trusted device, such as the browser you normally use, and then either show the QR code again to set up a new app or turn 2FA off (Mailo). Both options ask for your password.

If no trusted device is left, write to contact@mailo.com and explain the problem. A Mailo staff member told a locked-out user exactly that in the setup FAQ's comments (Mailo), and the FAQ on turning 2FA off gives the same address (Mailo). Give another email address for the reply, as Mailo's contact page asks. Mailo doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long this takes.

Your rescue email address and security question only help with a forgotten password (Mailo). More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

Sign in on the web, open Options > Sécurité, and click Configurer in the Double authentification section. Choose the option to turn off two-factor authentication, type your password, and click Valider (confirm). After that, Mailo stops asking for codes (Mailo). Then open the Mailo entry in Novaz and tap Remove account.
