NordPass has no two-factor setting of its own. The one you turn on belongs to your Nord Account, the single sign-in for NordPass, NordVPN and NordLocker, so one code then guards all three (NordPass). Nord calls it multi-factor authentication (MFA) and offers an authenticator app or a security key (NordPass). It's optional on personal plans. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the NordPass steps come from NordPass's own help center and from Nord Security's NordVPN help center, which covers the same Nord Account settings. Both are linked below, and we read them on October 20, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Nord Account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Keep this code out of NordPass

NordPass can make one-time codes for your other accounts. For this one, its help center says: "Do not store TOTP for NordPass inside NordPass Authenticator" (NordPass). If you were signed out on every device, you'd need the code to reach the vault that holds it. Use a separate app, such as Novaz.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

NordPass's help describes these steps (NordPass):

  1. Sign in to the NordPass app or the Web Vault at app.nordpass.com.
  2. Select the cog icon, scroll to the security section, and turn on Multi-factor Authentication (MFA).
  3. Sign in to your Nord Account and select Manage MFA.
  4. Enter the code Nord emails you to confirm your address.
  5. Select Set up next to Authenticator app.
  6. Nord shows a QR code and a key. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  7. If you can't scan it, tap +, then Enter key manually, and type the key as the Setup key. Nord's codes have six digits and change every 30 seconds, which matches a typed key in Novaz. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  8. Back on the Nord Account page, select Continue and enter the code from Novaz.
  9. Save the backup codes Nord shows, then select Continue.

On the Nord Account website, the same page is under Account settings > Multi-factor authentication (MFA) > Manage MFA (NordVPN). Labels vary slightly between Nord's help centers.

Backup codes

Nord gives you ten one-time backup codes, with Print and Copy options (NordVPN). If the phone is lost and you have no Novaz backup, or only an old one, these codes are your way back in. Keep them away from the phone, and not only in NordPass. To see them later, open Manage MFA, confirm your email, and select View codes. Get new codes makes a new set. See 2FA backup codes.

They aren't the 24-symbol Recovery Code, which resets a forgotten Master Password (NordPass). And the MFA code doesn't replace the Master Password: NordPass asks for it, or for biometrics, after the code (NordPass).

If NordPass rejects your code

NordPass's troubleshooting page suggests three checks (NordPass):

  • Use the code from your authenticator app. MFA codes are never emailed, though Nord emails other 6-digit codes, for signing in and confirming your address.
  • Make sure the account in your app is for your NordPass email address.
  • Wait for a fresh code and enter it promptly.

Then check your iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when it's 15 seconds or more off. More in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones or turning 2FA off

Nord's documented route is to turn the authenticator off and set it up again (NordVPN). In Account settings > Multi-factor authentication (MFA), select Disable next to Authenticator app, then Yes, disable MFA. For a new phone, do this while you still have the old one, then repeat the setup steps. If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore the account on the new iPhone instead and skip the reset. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

  • With a backup code: on the code screen, select Can't access your authenticator app? (NordPass). The troubleshooting page words it as See other options > Enter one of your backup codes. Then turn the authenticator off and set it up again.
  • Without backup codes: contact NordPass Customer Support by live chat or the email form at the bottom of any help article (NordPass). NordPass doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long it takes. NordVPN's help, for the same Nord Account, uses a reset form asking for the amount, method and date of a past purchase other than your latest (NordVPN).

NordPass Business accounts

Your admin decides whether you need an authenticator app, a security key or both (NordPass). If you're locked out, select Use Another Method, then Backup code (business codes have eight characters), or ask your admin to reset your authenticator app (NordPass).
