Plurk 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Plurk is the social site where you post short updates, called plurks, to a timeline and build up karma. Its two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional, and it works with any authenticator app that makes time-based codes. Plurk added the setting to its app in June 2026 and says the website has the same feature (Plurk). The second step is a 6-digit code from an app; Plurk describes no text-message option. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Plurk steps come from Plurk's own FAQ and from an announcement by Plurk EN, one of the official accounts listed in Plurk's FAQ, including the screenshots and the replies the account posted under it. We read them on October 21, 2026, as plain web pages and, for the replies, the post's public feed on plurk.com. We haven't tested them on a Plurk account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Before you start: confirm your email
Plurk treats your email address as the way back into your account if something goes wrong with 2FA, so it asks you to confirm your current email first (Plurk). If the Account screen shows Email not verified, use Send verification mail and open the link Plurk sends. If the address is old, change it first: Plurk's FAQ says a new address only takes effect once you verify it (Plurk).
Have your password ready too. Plurk asks for it again when you turn 2FA on and when you turn it off.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
On the website, Plurk's FAQ puts the setting under Settings > Account (Plurk). In the iPhone or Android app (iOS 7.32.0 or Android 6.95.0 and later), the announcement and its screenshots show this path (Plurk):
- Open Account and tap Two-Factor Authentication.
- Confirm your email and re-enter your password when Plurk asks.
- The screen Scan or enter the setup code shows a QR code, with the setup code under it and a Copy button. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it.
- If Plurk is open on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, then in Novaz tap + and Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Or tap Copy, then in Novaz tap +, then Enter key manually, and paste it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Tap Next step. On Enter verification code, type the 6-digit code Novaz shows (or use Paste), then tap Enable.
Plurk says the codes have 6 digits, but its pages don't say how often they change. Scanning the QR code is the safer choice, because the code carries those settings to your app.
Signing in, and how passkeys fit in
Plurk's announcement doesn't spell out when it asks for a code. Its FAQ on passkeys does: once you've added a passkey, you can sign in on your devices without typing a password and without going through two-factor authentication (Plurk). So expect the 6-digit code when you sign in with your password, and not when you use a passkey. Passkeys are under Settings > Account > Manage passkeys.
No backup codes
Plurk's pages don't mention backup or recovery codes. The only backup it names is your confirmed email. Unless you back up Novaz, the key exists only on your iPhone, so keep that email account secure.
If Plurk rejects your code
Plurk gives no advice for rejected codes. The usual cause is the phone's clock: on iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. If you typed the key by hand, try setting it up again with the QR code. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
Plurk doesn't describe a way to move 2FA to a new phone. Since you can turn 2FA off yourself, the simple route is to do that while you still have the old phone, then turn it back on and scan the new QR code with the new one. With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
If you've added a passkey, sign in with it, since Plurk says passkey sign-ins skip 2FA. Then turn 2FA off and set it up again.
Without a passkey, Plurk's only documented fallback is the email you confirmed before setup, but it doesn't explain how that recovery works. Plurk's Contact Us form has subjects for Login or Password issue and Security issues; write from the email on your account and say you've lost your 2FA device. Plurk doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long it takes. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Turning 2FA off
Plurk's staff called 2FA optional in a reply on the announcement, and said you confirm your password to turn it off, as when turning it on (Plurk). Plurk doesn't show the screen for turning it off; look on the same Two-Factor Authentication page where you turned it on. After that, remove the Plurk entry from Novaz: open it and tap Remove account.
