Servus Credit Union 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
Servus Credit Union online banking, for members in Alberta, uses two kinds of codes. Text-message codes come built in: you confirm a mobile number the first time you sign in, and Servus texts you a code when you add or change a bill payee or an Interac e-Transfer contact (Servus). On top of that, you can turn on what Servus calls two-step authentication, with codes from an authenticator app. It's optional (Servus).
Servus writes its help for one app: "Google Authenticator is the app supported by Servus for two-step authentication" (Servus). Other authenticators are allowed, but the Member Contact Centre won't help you with them. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Servus steps come from Servus's own help pages, linked below, which we read on October 19, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Servus account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on two-step authentication
Servus's setup page, last updated in July 2025, describes these steps in online banking (Servus):
- Sign in to Servus online banking. From the main menu, go to the More tab and select Profile and settings.
- Under Security settings, select Two-step authentication.
- Select Turn on two-step authentication.
- Servus offers links to download an authenticator. You already have Novaz, so select I have installed the app.
- Servus shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone. Then select Continue.
- If you can't scan it, select Can't scan the QR code for steps to add the account by hand. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, type Servus as the Service, and enter the key as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key? Then select Continue.
- When Servus asks, type the 6-digit code from Novaz and select Continue.
Servus doesn't say what its text key is called, how long it is, or how often its codes change. Scanning the QR code is the safer choice, because it carries those settings into Novaz. A key typed by hand always gets 6-digit codes every 30 seconds, and Novaz needs it to be at least 16 characters.
The page only describes online banking and doesn't say whether the mobile app has the same setting. A computer is the simplest place to do this.
When Servus asks for the code
Servus's pages don't agree. The 2025 setup page says you'll need the code for certain kinds of transactions (Servus), and a 2021 Servus article gives higher-limit Interac e-Transfers as the example (Servus). Servus's 2024 overview of its current online banking calls it a second layer during sign-in (Servus). So expect the prompt on larger transactions, and possibly when you sign in.
If you came from connectFirst
connectFirst online banking has moved to Servus. Your first sign-in must be in a web browser, where Servus has you confirm a phone number and enter a texted code, even if you had multi-factor authentication with connectFirst (Servus). The FAQ says you can change your authentication method after that, without listing the choices (Servus).
No backup codes
Servus's help doesn't mention backup or recovery codes. With Novaz, the key lives only on your iPhone unless you turn on iCloud backup or keep a backup file (Settings > Backup). Keep your profile's email address and mobile number current: Servus emails a code when you unlock a locked account (Servus), and sends an alert when two-step authentication is turned on or reset. You can check both under More > Profile and settings > Edit email & SMS (Servus).
If Servus rejects your code
Servus's help doesn't cover rejected authenticator codes. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock: open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
New phone or lost authenticator
Servus doesn't explain how to move two-step authentication to a new phone or what to do if you lose the app. That alert for resetting it shows a reset exists, but no public page says how to ask for one, what proof Servus wants, or how long it takes.
For access problems, Servus points you to its Member Contact Centre, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week: 1.877.378.8728 for Servus members, 1.866.923.4778 for former connectFirst members. Servus says these teams can reset passwords and resolve access issues (Servus).
If you're switching iPhones and have a Novaz backup (iCloud backup or a backup file), restore it on the new iPhone and Servus comes with it, no reset needed. Without one, ask Servus how to reset two-step authentication before you wipe the old phone, while Novaz there still shows codes, then add Servus on the new phone from a fresh QR code.
