united-domains is a German domain registrar, and the Portfolio is where its customers manage their domains. Two-step verification for the Portfolio login is optional and free (united-domains). united-domains recommends Google Authenticator but says other one-time password apps from the App Store work too (united-domains).

Two things stand out. Setup asks for a phone number, but not for text-message codes: it's the number support calls back if you lose the app. And actions on single domains can have their own, separate 2FA, part of a paid package. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the united-domains steps come from united-domains' own help center, linked below, which we read on October 20, 2026. The help center is in German, so we give the German labels with an English meaning in parentheses. We haven't tested the steps on a united-domains account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA for your Portfolio login

united-domains calls it Zweistufige Verifizierung (two-step verification). Its setup article, last updated in February 2024, gives these steps (united-domains):

  1. On united-domains.de, click the user icon at the top right, enter your email address and password, and click Login.
  2. In the navigation, click Meine Daten (my details).
  3. In the menu on the left, click Zweistufige Verifizierung.
  4. Click Aktivieren (activate).
  5. Enter a phone number for reaching you if you lose the app, then click Speichern (save). united-domains asks you not to use the number of the phone that has the app.
  6. The Portfolio shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  7. Type the 6-digit code from Novaz into the field and click Aktivieren again.

The article mentions only the QR code, not a key to type, so plan to scan. If you do find a key, tap +, then Enter key manually in Novaz, and paste it as the Setup key (what a setup key is).

Save the 9 backup codes

Right after activation, united-domains shows 9 backup codes and suggests printing them. Each works once. You can generate a new set at any time, which cancels the old one (united-domains). The article doesn't name the button.

If you have no Novaz backup (iCloud backup or a backup file), the keys exist only on your iPhone, and these codes are your way back in. More in 2FA backup codes.

When united-domains asks for a code

Once 2FA is on, every Portfolio sign-in takes your email address, password and a code. The help pages mention no way to remember a device. Don't confuse the app code with the PIN united-domains emails you after an unusual login attempt (united-domains).

2FA for domain actions (Domain-Tresor)

This comes only with Domain-Tresor, a security package billed yearly per domain that also includes DNSSEC and Whois Domain Privacy (united-domains). Once it's on, every action on that domain needs a code.

In the domain's config menu, open the Domain-Tresor tile and click Aktivieren. Enter your mobile number, scan the QR code, type the code into Verifizierungscode, and create backup codes on the next screen (united-domains).

It can't share the login setup, and each domain gets its own, so expect several united-domains entries in Novaz. For new backup codes, click Konfigurieren in the Zwei-Faktor-Authentifizierung block, then Neue Codes generieren.

If united-domains rejects your code

united-domains' own advice: a code can run out between typing it and sending it, so wait for the next one and enter that. If codes keep failing, use a backup code (united-domains).

Also check the iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when it's 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

united-domains doesn't describe a phone switch. It does document turning 2FA off (below) and on again, so do both while the old phone still makes codes, scanning the new QR code with the new phone. Repeat for each Domain-Tresor domain. In Novaz, iCloud backup or a backup file lets you restore these entries on the new iPhone instead: see How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

united-domains gives two ways back into the Portfolio (united-domains):

  • A backup code, typed with your email address and password.
  • Support (the help center lists 08151 / 36867-0). united-domains calls you back on the number you saved during setup to confirm it's you, then turns off two-step verification. Sign in with email and password and set it up again.

The pages don't say what happens if that number no longer works, or how long it takes. For domain actions, the Domain-Tresor backup codes can turn that 2FA off. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

Go to Meine Daten > Zweistufige Verifizierung and click the button to deactivate it. Enter one last code from the app or from your backup codes and click Deaktivieren again. After that, you sign in with email and password only (united-domains).

Accounts at uniteddomains.com (ud.com)

uniteddomains.com is the same company's separate, English-language site, closed to new European customers since May 2018 (ud.com). There, click your name at the top right, choose Account, open the Security tab and click Enable under Two-Factor Authentication. The red Disable two-factor authentication button turns it off (ud.com).

ud.com emails you single-use recovery codes at setup (ud.com). Keep them: without the app and the codes, ud.com says "we cannot assist you with logging in to your account" (ud.com).
