Your Vimeo account is where you upload, store and share your videos. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional there, though Vimeo recommends it (Vimeo). You pick one of two kinds: a security code sent to your email at each sign-in, or a code from an authenticator app (Vimeo). This guide covers the app, using Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.

Know this before you start: Vimeo's help mentions no backup codes. Your email is the safety net instead, since at sign-in you can ask for an emailed code. Make sure you can still get into it.

How we checked this guide: the Vimeo steps come from Vimeo's own help center articles, linked below, which we read on October 20, 2026. Vimeo's main 2FA article was last updated on March 5, 2025. We haven't tested the steps on a Vimeo account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Sign in to Vimeo in a web browser, then follow Vimeo's steps (Vimeo):

  1. Open your Vimeo security settings.
  2. Select 2FA, then choose Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) - Authenticator.
  3. A window opens with a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  4. If you can't scan it, Vimeo also shows the key as text. It calls this a security code, the same name it uses for sign-in codes. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, and type it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  5. Enter the 6-digit code from Novaz to verify the app.
  6. Save your settings. Vimeo asks for a code from your next sign-in onward.

Vimeo's help doesn't say how often its codes change, so scanning is the safer choice: the QR code tells your app the settings. A key typed by hand in Novaz always gets 6 digits every 30 seconds.

Signing in afterwards

After your email and password, Vimeo asks for the code from your app (Vimeo). Its help doesn't mention trusted devices, or say whether the step applies to Facebook, Google or Apple sign-in. Enterprise teams using single sign-on (SSO) go through their organization's sign-in page, which may have its own 2FA (Vimeo).

If Vimeo rejects your code

Vimeo's help has no advice for a refused app code. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock: open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Don't keep guessing. After a series of failed attempts, Vimeo blocks sign-in for 15 minutes, and every attempt during the block starts the wait over. Resetting your password doesn't shorten it. If you're still blocked afterwards, Vimeo says to contact Support (Vimeo).

Changing phones

Vimeo's help doesn't describe moving 2FA to a new phone, but you can use the settings it does document. While you can still sign in, choose Do not use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and save, then choose Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) - Authenticator again and scan the new QR code with the new iPhone (Vimeo). Do it before you wipe the old phone. If you've turned on iCloud backup in Novaz or kept a backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead, and the Vimeo codes keep working. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

Sign in with your email and password, and when Vimeo asks for the app's code, request a code by email instead. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder and add @vimeo.com as a safe sender (Vimeo). Once you're in, set up the authenticator again or switch to email codes.

If you've lost that email too, Vimeo has no separate 2FA recovery. Its help for that case points to the account access form, which works only while you're signed out. On its second page, choose Reset Password isn't working to reach Support (Vimeo):

  • Paid accounts: Vimeo checks your most recent payment, through a receipt or invoice, or the card's last four digits, expiry date, cardholder name, and the exact date and amount charged. Then it changes the login email. Never send your password or full card number.
  • Free accounts with no payment history: Vimeo says there's no way to prove ownership, so it can't restore access, calling that "a firm rule, not a matter of discretion" (Vimeo).

Vimeo doesn't say how long recovery takes. Its general first-reply estimate is a few hours on paid plans and usually within 3 business days on free accounts (Vimeo). More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

In your security settings, select 2FA, choose Do not use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), and save (Vimeo). Then open the Vimeo entry in Novaz and tap Remove account.

Vimeo OTT is separate

Vimeo OTT sites, managed at vhx.tv, have their own 2FA with 10 recovery codes, which Owners and Admins can require for the team (Vimeo). This guide covers your regular Vimeo account.
