Zapier 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
Your Zapier account holds your Zap workflows, Tables and Forms (Zapier). Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional and included on every plan, Free too (Zapier). It works one way: an authenticator app, backed by 10 recovery codes. Paid plans can add an emergency phone number.
Recovery is strict: lose your phone and your codes, and Zapier says the account is gone for good. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Zapier steps come from Zapier's own help center, linked below, which we read on October 20, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Zapier account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Before you start
- Your company uses SAML single sign-on: you can't turn on 2FA in Zapier. Your identity provider handles it (Zapier).
- Team or Enterprise plan: each member sets up 2FA for their own account. Owners and admins don't manage it (Zapier), though Enterprise admins with a verified domain can see who has it on (Zapier).
- Have a place ready for 10 recovery codes, such as a password manager or paper. Setup makes you type one back.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
Zapier's help page lists these steps (Zapier):
- Open your Zapier Settings. In the left sidebar, under My account, select Security and data.
- In the Security section, select Two-Factor Authentication.
- Click Setup Two-Factor Authentication. Under Get an Authentication App, click Next Step.
- Under Verify Code, Zapier shows a QR code (its help calls it a barcode). In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code. If the code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Type the 6-digit code from Novaz and click Next Step.
- Under Save Your Recovery Codes, click Copy or Download (a text file), store the codes, and click Next.
- Under Verify Your Recovery Codes, type one of the codes and click Next Step.
- Optional, on paid plans: add an emergency phone number (below). The help page ends with Finish Setup.
Zapier's help mentions no text key and no code interval, so scan the QR code: it carries the code settings to Novaz. If you're offered a key anyway, see What is a 2FA setup key?
The emergency phone number
Under Emergency Verification, enter a number with a plus sign and country code and click Send Code. Type a code from Novaz in the dialog and click Submit Code. Then enter the code Zapier texts you in Verification Code, click Verify, and Finish Setup (Zapier). Zapier doesn't say when it uses this number, so don't count on it in place of the codes.
Your recovery codes are the only way back
Zapier's support team can't restore access without a recovery code. In the words of its recovery page, "Zapier cannot bypass 2FA or regenerate recovery codes" (Zapier).
If you lose the iPhone and have no Novaz backup (iCloud backup or a backup file), the codes are what gets you in. Store them away from your phone. See 2FA backup codes.
- To see them again: open the two-factor settings and enter a code from Novaz. They appear under Save Your Recovery Codes, minus any you've used.
- If someone may have seen them: click Regenerate Codes there for a new set of 10. Zapier doesn't say whether the old set stops working.
When Zapier asks for a code
Once 2FA is on, Zapier asks for a code from your app the next time you log in (Zapier). It also asks before showing your recovery codes, before turning 2FA off, and when you change your account email, where the field is Authentication Code (Zapier). Its pages don't mention trusted devices, or say whether Google sign-in asks for the code.
If Zapier rejects your code
Zapier's help doesn't cover rejected codes. Check the iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
Zapier has no transfer step: turn 2FA off (below), then set it up again (Zapier). Do it while the old iPhone still works, since turning 2FA off asks for codes. If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead and skip this. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
- Log in as usual. When Zapier asks for your two-factor code, click Use a recovery code.
- Type an unused code and click Confirm.
- Set up your authenticator again so you aren't locked out next time. Without the app, turning 2FA off takes a second recovery code: one to log in, one to disable it (Zapier).
Without the codes, Zapier's recovery page offers no other route (Zapier). More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Turning 2FA off
- In Settings, under My account, select Security and data, then Two-Factor Authentication, and enter a code from Novaz.
- In the Disable 2FA section, click Disable, then Are you sure?.
- Enter another code in the dialog and click Submit Code.
Zapier turns 2FA off and logs you out (Zapier). In Novaz, open the entry and tap Remove account.
