Earth Class Mail, the virtual mailbox service that scans your postal mail, is now part of LegalZoom and sold as LegalZoom Virtual Mail (LegalZoom). The name changed, but the mailbox still runs on Earth Class Mail's systems: earthclassmail.com now forwards to LegalZoom, while the web app at app.earthclassmail.com and the help center at help.earthclassmail.com still carry the Earth Class Mail name. The iPhone app is listed as LZ Virtual Mail.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional. You can use text-message codes, an authenticator app, or both (Earth Class Mail). LegalZoom's sales pages mention 2FA as one of the ways your mailbox is protected, but they don't say it's required (LegalZoom). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Virtual Mail steps come from Earth Class Mail's own help center and its official announcements page, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. The help center blocks automated access, so we read its 2FA article in an archived copy on web.archive.org from June 2024 (the article itself was last updated in August 2023). The announcements are from 2021. We haven't tested any of this on an account, and the steps predate the LegalZoom rename, so labels may differ. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

The help article gives these steps for the web app (Earth Class Mail):

  1. Sign in to your mailbox and open Settings, then the Security tab.
  2. Pick the method you want: SMS codes, an authenticator app, or both. To use Novaz, turn on the toggle next to Authenticator app.
  3. A QR code appears. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen.
  4. Type the code Novaz shows into the confirmation box and continue.
  5. Your backup code appears on screen as soon as 2FA is on. Write it down before you leave the page (more below).

The 2021 announcement for the mobile apps describes the same setup from the phone: Settings > Security > Two-factor authentication, then the toggle next to Authenticator app. After adding the account to your authenticator app you tap Continue, type the app's code, and tap Continue again (Earth Class Mail).

Setting it up on the same iPhone. If you're in the LZ Virtual Mail app on the iPhone that runs Novaz, you can't point the camera at the screen. Take a screenshot of the QR code, then in Novaz tap + and Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.

Typing the key instead. The mobile announcement says a code under the QR code can be tapped to copy it into your authenticator app. It doesn't give that key a name. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, and paste it as the Setup key. Neither page says how many digits the codes have or how often they change, so scanning the QR code is the safer choice: it carries those settings with it. See What is a 2FA setup key?

Keep the backup code

You get one backup code, not a list. Both official pages say it's created automatically when 2FA turns on, and that you'll need it if you lose access to your verification method. The help article calls it "a one-time backup code generated during the 2FA activation" (Earth Class Mail). Neither page says whether you can make a new one later.

Unless you back up Novaz with iCloud backup or a backup file, its keys exist only on your iPhone. This code is your safety net, so store it in a password manager or on paper, not only on the same phone. Turning on text-message codes as well gives you a second way in. More in 2FA backup codes.

When you'll be asked for a code

After setup, a sign-in from a device the service doesn't recognize needs your password and a fresh code, from Novaz or by text (Earth Class Mail).

When you sign in, you can check Trust this device to skip codes on that device from then on. Trusted devices are listed under Settings > Security > Trusted devices (Earth Class Mail). Only trust devices you own.

If your code is rejected

The official pages don't cover rejected codes. The most common cause is the iPhone's clock: go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. For other causes, see Authenticator code not working?

New phone or lost phone

The official pages don't describe how to move the authenticator to a new phone or how to turn 2FA off. With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you restore your accounts on the new iPhone and the codes keep working. Without one, you'll need to set the account up again on the new iPhone. Do that while you can still sign in, and keep the old phone until it's done. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If the phone is gone:

  • Use your backup code.
  • If you also turned on text-message codes, ask for a code by SMS instead.
  • If neither works, contact customer support. The help article lists support@earthclassmail.com and (210) 802-5211, 8:00 AM to 5 PM Central (Earth Class Mail). That page is from before the LegalZoom rename, so check the contact details in your account or on LegalZoom's site if they don't work.

The official pages don't say what proof support asks for or how long recovery takes. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
