Finary is a wealth-tracking app: you link your bank and brokerage accounts, such as Degiro or Trade Republic, and follow everything in one place. Since it sees so much of your money, its two-factor authentication (2FA) is worth the minute it takes. There's only one kind. Finary doesn't text you codes; the second step always comes from an authenticator app on your phone (Finary). It's optional, and you can switch it on from the mobile app or the website.

This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way. If you'd like to know why app codes beat text messages, see Authenticator app vs SMS.

How we checked this guide: the Finary steps come from Finary's own help center, linked below, including the screenshots in its articles, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Finary account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Finary documents the steps on the web version, at app.finary.com (Finary):

  1. Open your Settings and go to My account. Under Security, find Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and click Enable 2FA.
  2. A window called Add a 2FA shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen. If you're doing this in the Finary app on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  3. Finary's screenshot shows a Can't scan this QR Code ? link under the code. The help text doesn't say what it shows. If it gives you a text key, open Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, and type it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  4. Type the code from Novaz into Finary and click Activate.
  5. Finary then shows your recovery codes. Save them (the screenshot offers Copy all, Download .txt file and Print), tick the box confirming you've stored them, and click Done.

Finary's help doesn't say how many digits its codes have or how often they change. Scanning the QR code is the safer route, since the code carries those settings to your app. A key typed by hand always gets 6 digits every 30 seconds.

The screenshots in this article date from early 2024, so the screens you see may look a little different.

Your recovery codes are shown once

After you activate 2FA, Finary displays 20 single-use recovery codes and never shows them again. Finary itself can't see them, so support can't hand them back if your phone goes missing (Finary, Finary).

That matters with Novaz: unless you turn on iCloud backup or export a backup file, its keys exist only on your iPhone. The recovery codes get you back in if the phone is gone and you have no up-to-date Novaz backup. Keep them in a password manager or on paper, away from the phone. More in 2FA backup codes.

The Manage 2FA window in Finary's settings also has a Regenerate backup codes button. A new set replaces the old one, and the earlier codes stop working (Finary).

When Finary asks for a code

Once 2FA is on, Finary asks for a code from your app each time you sign in, starting with your next sign-in (Finary).

Finary's security advice adds one rule worth remembering: it will never ask for your 2FA codes or recovery codes by email, text message or phone (Finary). Anyone who does is not Finary.

If Finary rejects your code

Finary's only advice for an invalid 2FA code is to write to its support team at hello@finary.com to reset 2FA (Finary). Before you do, check your iPhone's clock, which is the usual cause: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

The same page notes that some VPN address ranges trigger an extra check at sign-in. If you're stuck, turn the VPN off for a moment.

If you lose your authenticator

Finary describes two routes (Finary):

  • You still have your recovery codes. In the Finary mobile app or at app.finary.com, choose Use a recovery code on the 2FA screen and enter one of them. Once you're in, go to My account, click Manage 2FA, and turn 2FA off. You can then set it up again with your new phone.
  • You don't have them. Email hello@finary.com with the subject line "Lost 2FA". Finary says its team will verify your identity, but it doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long this takes.

Changing phones

Finary has no separate move-to-a-new-phone feature in its help. The documented way is to turn 2FA off under Manage 2FA and turn it on again (Finary). Do this while the old phone still works, and on the new phone you scan a fresh QR code. If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead and skip this. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

Turning 2FA off

You can switch it off at any time while you're signed in: in Settings, click Manage 2FA, then the disable button (Finary). Finary's own pages name that button differently: Deactivate my 2FA in the setup article, Disable my 2FA in the recovery article, and Disable 2FA in the screenshots. Afterwards, remove Finary from Novaz too: open the account and tap Remove account.
