Selfwealth 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Selfwealth, now branded Selfwealth by Syfe, is an Australian online share trading platform. It calls two-factor authentication multi-factor authentication (MFA) and gives you two methods: an authenticator app, which it recommends, and an SMS passcode sent to an Australian mobile number (Selfwealth). The one catch: you can only set it up in the Selfwealth web app, not in the phone app. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Selfwealth steps come from Selfwealth's own help center, linked below, which we read on October 24, 2026. The help center blocks automated page requests, so we read the articles through its own public article feed. We haven't tested the steps on a Selfwealth account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Is MFA required?
No, but skipping it doesn't mean skipping extra checks. Without MFA, Selfwealth emails a one-time passcode to your registered address when it wants more proof, and you can choose Remember this browser to see it less often on devices you trust (Selfwealth). For the trade-offs between app codes and text messages, see Authenticator app vs SMS.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
Do this on a computer or in a phone browser, in the Selfwealth web app (Selfwealth):
- Log in to the Selfwealth web app at onboarding.secure.selfwealth.com.au/login.
- Open Settings. Another Selfwealth article says you reach it from your avatar in the top-right corner (Selfwealth).
- Go to the Personal Details tab.
- In the Multi-factor Authentication section, select Enable Authenticator.
- Follow the prompts. Selfwealth gives you recovery codes during setup. Save them before you go on (more below).
- Selfwealth shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Complete the activation with the code Novaz shows for Selfwealth.
Selfwealth's article only describes scanning the QR code. It doesn't say whether a text key is offered if you can't scan. If one is, tap +, then Enter key manually in Novaz, and type it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
Once it's on, it covers the Selfwealth mobile app too. The phone app will ask you to sign in again the next time you open it.
How the two methods work together
If you turn on both the authenticator app and SMS passcodes, Selfwealth always asks for the authenticator code. You can turn off the authenticator app later to go back to SMS. SMS works differently: once it's on, Selfwealth says it can't be removed, though you can change the mobile number or add an app on top (Selfwealth). The article doesn't describe a way to turn MFA off completely, or the exact button for removing the authenticator. Selfwealth only says you manage both methods from the Settings page of the web app.
Keep your recovery codes
Selfwealth's recovery codes are meant for the case where you lose the device with your authenticator. You can write them down or keep them digitally, as long as they're somewhere safe (Selfwealth). With Novaz they matter most if you haven't turned on iCloud backup or kept a backup file, because then its keys exist only on your iPhone. The help center doesn't say how many codes you get or whether you can make new ones. See 2FA backup codes.
When Selfwealth asks for a code
Not at every login. Selfwealth asks for MFA when something looks riskier than usual (Selfwealth):
- signing in from a device or browser it doesn't know,
- using incognito or private browsing,
- making some account management changes.
Changing your nominated bank account is one of those: in the mobile app, the last step of the update is verifying with your MFA method (Selfwealth).
If Selfwealth rejects your code
Selfwealth's help doesn't cover rejected authenticator codes. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
Selfwealth doesn't describe a phone change. With Novaz's iCloud backup or a backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone. Without one, while the old phone still works, turn off the authenticator in the web app's Settings and enable it again with the new phone. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Use one of your recovery codes. If you don't have them, Selfwealth says to contact it by live chat or email with your account details at hand, and it will help you get back in (Selfwealth). It doesn't list which details it checks or how long recovery takes. Its contact page says live chat runs 24 hours a day, five days a week, and that retail clients can also phone the Service Experience team from 10am to 6pm Melbourne time (Selfwealth).
