Frame.io 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Frame.io is where creative teams upload, review and approve video and other media (Frame.io). Its two-factor authentication (2FA) works differently from most accounts: you won't find a setting to turn it on for yourself. Frame.io's help says "we do not support per-user self-service 2FA management", and that applies to every plan (Frame.io). 2FA shows up only when the owner of an Enterprise account makes it mandatory, and then you set it up the next time you sign in, with an authenticator app or text messages. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Frame.io steps come from Frame.io's own help pages, linked below, which we read on October 20, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Frame.io account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
When Frame.io asks you to set up 2FA
An Enterprise account owner asks Frame.io Support, through the chat icon at the bottom right, to require 2FA. Support confirms and switches it on for the whole account (Frame.io). From then on:
- Every member gets an email and has 24 hours to set up 2FA. Anyone who hasn't is signed out when the 24 hours end, and the next sign-in leads straight to the setup.
- People invited later have to set up 2FA before they can get into the account.
- If you sign in through your company's single sign-on (SSO), you're exempt. Your identity provider handles that part.
Signed in to a work account with a personal email address? Frame.io suggests switching to your work address before the requirement starts, so your personal accounts stay free of 2FA (Frame.io). You change the address from your profile settings (Frame.io).
Frame.io's help mentions one other route: signing in with your Adobe account, which it says brings stronger 2FA security. The article sits in the Enterprise section and doesn't say which plans can use it. In Account Settings, on the Profile tab, find Adobe under Authentication and choose Connect. Both accounts need the same email address, and SSO and Google authentication must be off first (Frame.io). From then on, 2FA is a matter for Adobe's own settings, which this guide doesn't cover. The same applies to Adobe managed company accounts, whose paid users sign in with Adobe Identity (Frame.io).
Set up the authenticator app
The flow starts at your first sign-in after the requirement is on (Frame.io):
- When Frame.io asks how you want to verify, choose Authenticator app. The other choice, Text message, sends codes to your phone number. See authenticator app vs. SMS.
- Frame.io shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Frame.io also lets you enter the code by hand. Frame.io doesn't name that key or give its length. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, type Frame.io as the Service, and put the key in Setup key. Novaz needs at least 16 characters for a typed key, so if it refuses, scan the QR code. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- On Frame.io's 2FA configuration page, type the 6-digit code that Novaz shows.
- Frame.io then shows your backup codes. Download them before you move on.
Keep the backup codes somewhere else
Each backup code works once. Frame.io suggests a safe place such as a password manager (Frame.io). With Novaz, these codes are your fallback if the phone is gone and you haven't turned on iCloud backup or exported a backup file: without one, Novaz keeps its keys only on that iPhone. Frame.io's pages don't say how many codes you get or whether you can make new ones. More in 2FA backup codes.
Once 2FA is on, Frame.io asks for a code at every sign-in, and its help mentions no way to trust a device.
If Frame.io rejects your code
Frame.io's help doesn't cover rejected codes. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock: open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Lost your phone, or moving to a new one
- You have a backup code: at sign-in, choose Enter recovery code and type one (Frame.io).
- You don't: ask your account admin. The admin contacts Frame.io Support, which suspends 2FA on your login for 24 hours. When the 24 hours are up, Frame.io signs you out and you set up 2FA again at your next sign-in (Frame.io).
Frame.io doesn't say what Support checks first, or describe another way to move 2FA to a new phone. If you're changing iPhones and have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, restore it on the new phone and Frame.io's codes keep working. Without one, ask your admin for that 24-hour pass and add Frame.io to Novaz on the new phone during the fresh setup, and keep the old phone until that's done. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone and Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Turning 2FA off
You can't while your account requires it. Beyond the 24-hour suspension, Frame.io doesn't explain how an owner lifts the requirement.
