Gate is the crypto exchange that used to be called Gate.io. It switched to the gate.com domain and one brand name on May 19, 2025, and gate.io links now forward there (Gate).

Gate's help names only two apps, Google Authenticator and its own Gate Authenticator. But the setup is generic: you copy a secret key into an app that makes time-based (TOTP) codes (Gate), so any authenticator app works. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Gate can also check sign-ins with SMS or email codes.

How we checked this guide: the Gate steps come from Gate's own help center, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Gate account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Before you start: two things to know

  • Withdrawals pause for a day. Gate's security guide says that after you bind or unbind the authenticator, P2P trading and withdrawals are suspended for 24 hours (Gate). Don't make changes right before you need to move funds.
  • One authenticator at a time. You can bind only one app to your account. To switch apps, you unbind the current one first (Gate).

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Gate's binding guide describes these steps on Gate Web (Gate):

  1. Sign in to Gate in a browser. Click Profile in the top-right corner, then Security Center.
  2. Find Google Authenticator and click Enable. This is the setting for any authenticator app, not only Google's.
  3. Gate shows a secret key. Copy it.
  4. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually. Type "Gate" as the Service, add your Gate email or username as the Account if you like, and enter the key as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  5. Back on Gate, enter the 6-digit code from Novaz, fill in any other codes the page asks for, and click Confirm.

Gate's guide doesn't mention a QR code. If your screen shows one, scanning it is the easier route: in Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code. If you're doing this in the Gate app on the same iPhone, either copy the key and paste it into Setup key, or take a screenshot of a QR code and use Choose a photo (scanning a QR code on the same iPhone).

Gate doesn't say how often its codes change. Its steps have you type the key into Google Authenticator by hand, and a typed key in Novaz gets the same default: 6 digits every 30 seconds.

Labels may differ. Gate's older guide, from 2020, says Security Settings instead of Security Center. In the Gate app it gives: profile icon (top left), the arrow next to it, Security, Google Authenticator, Bind (Gate).

When Gate asks for the code

Gate's binding guide says the authenticator is needed for signing in, withdrawals, password changes and other security operations (Gate). Its older guide also describes a separate Login 2-Step Verification setting, under Security Settings, where you choose whether sign-in asks for an SMS, authenticator or email code every time (Gate). After binding Novaz, check that setting so sign-in uses the code you expect.

No backup codes

None of Gate's help pages mention backup or recovery codes. Unless you turn on iCloud backup or export a backup file in Novaz, its keys exist only on your iPhone, so keep the phone number and email on your Gate account current: Gate's reset route depends on them. See 2FA backup codes.

If Gate rejects your code

Gate's own advice is to check your phone's time settings, because the codes depend on an accurate clock (Gate). On iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

While you still have the old phone, go to Security Center, find Google Authenticator, follow the prompts to unbind it, then bind it again with the new phone using the steps above (Gate). Expect the 24-hour withdrawal pause after each change. If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead and keep the same binding. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

Without backup codes, the way back is a security reset. Gate's guide gives three cases (Gate):

  • You can still sign in (for example with SMS or email codes): on Gate Web, click Security Reset, complete the identity verification on screen, and submit the request to unbind the authenticator.
  • You can't sign in: the reset isn't available on the web while you're signed out. Open the Gate app, and on the verification code page tap unable to verify? to send the request.
  • You also forgot your password: in the Gate app, tap Forgot Password, enter your registered phone number or email and the code sent to it, then tap unable to verify? on the authenticator step.

Gate reviews reset requests within 24 hours and emails you the result. It doesn't say what proof the identity check asks for. After the reset, bind Novaz again. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

Use the same unbind steps: Security Center, Google Authenticator, then the prompts. The 24-hour withdrawal pause applies here too (Gate).
