IFTTT 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Your IFTTT account runs your Applets and holds the connections to everything they touch, from smart lights to email. IFTTT calls its 2FA two-step verification. It's optional, but IFTTT recommends it (IFTTT).
The thing to know before you start: IFTTT can't help you if you lose your authenticator app and your backup code. The only way back is to have the account deleted and start over, so the backup code matters more here than on most services.
New setups use an authenticator app. IFTTT stopped offering text-message codes for new two-step setups in 2023 (IFTTT). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the IFTTT steps come from IFTTT's own help center, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. The help center's web pages blocked automated access, so we read the same articles through its public article feed on help.ifttt.com. We haven't tested the steps on an IFTTT account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
On the web (IFTTT):
- Sign in at ifttt.com and open your account settings at ifttt.com/settings.
- Under two-step verification, click Enable two-step verification.
- Enter your IFTTT password.
- Add IFTTT to your authenticator app and finish the setup there. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the code on your screen. If the code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Save the backup code IFTTT gives you (more on this below).
In the IFTTT mobile app, tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner, select Settings, then tap Enable Two-Step Verification and follow the prompts (IFTTT). IFTTT's articles capitalize the button differently, so the exact label you see may vary.
IFTTT's help doesn't describe the setup screen itself. It doesn't mention a QR code or a text key. If you only see a key, in Novaz tap +, then Enter key manually, and paste it into Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
IFTTT's sign-in codes are six digits (IFTTT).
Your one backup code
IFTTT gives you a single backup code, not a list. One article describes it as a 16-digit code (IFTTT). IFTTT can't look it up for you, and it can't issue a new one (IFTTT).
The code also changes each time you turn two-step verification off and on again, so an old copy stops working (IFTTT). Whenever you redo the setup, replace the saved code.
Without a Novaz backup (iCloud backup or a backup file), the keys exist only on your iPhone, and the IFTTT backup code is your only fallback. Store it away from your phone, in a password manager or on paper. More in 2FA backup codes.
Signing in with Google, Apple or Facebook
IFTTT lets you sign in with Apple, Google or Facebook as well as with your email and password. Two-step verification still applies: if it's on, IFTTT asks for your code after the social sign-in (IFTTT). IFTTT's help doesn't say whether it remembers trusted devices.
If IFTTT rejects your code
IFTTT's help doesn't cover rejected authenticator codes. For a backup code that fails, it suggests checking for a typo and making sure the code isn't an old one from an earlier setup (IFTTT).
For app codes, check your iPhone's clock first: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Moving to a new phone
IFTTT lists switching phones as a common reason people get locked out. Its documented way to change your authentication method is to turn two-step verification off, which takes your password and a current code or the backup code, then turn it on again (IFTTT). Do this while the old phone still works, and save the new backup code.
If you restore your Novaz accounts on the new iPhone from iCloud backup or a backup file, you can skip this. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Sign in with your backup code in place of the six-digit code (IFTTT). Once you're in, turn two-step verification off and set it up again on your new phone.
Without the app or the backup code, IFTTT says it can't reset your authentication method. In that case IFTTT says "the only option is to delete your IFTTT account" (IFTTT). You ask for this through IFTTT's contact form. Then you can create a new account with the same email address. The deletion can't be undone, and every Applet and connection on the old account is lost. IFTTT doesn't say how long it takes.

Turning 2FA off
Open your account settings. Under two-step verification, click Disable two-step verification, enter your password, then enter a code from your app or your backup code (IFTTT). You can't turn it off without one of them. Afterwards, remove IFTTT from Novaz: open the account and tap Remove account.
