Lexware Office is the cloud accounting and invoicing software from Lexware that used to be called lexoffice. Only the name changed: your login, contracts and data stay the same (Lexware). Its two-step sign-in, which Lexware calls Anmeldung in zwei Schritten (two-step sign-in), is optional and works two ways: a push prompt in the Lexware app, or a 6-digit code from an authenticator app. You can turn on one or both (Lexware).

The catch is that the setup walks you toward the Lexware app first. The authenticator option sits behind a link you have to look for. This guide shows where it is, using Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Lexware Office steps come from Lexware's own help center, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. The help center is in German, so the labels here are the German ones it quotes, with our translation in parentheses. We haven't tested them on a Lexware Office account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Lexware's help describes these steps (Lexware):

  1. Sign in to Lexware Office in your browser. Click the profile icon in the main menu, then your personal profile.
  2. Go to the section Anmeldung in zwei Schritten (Zwei-Faktor-Authentifizierung) and click the row ZWEI-FAKTOR-AUTHENTIFIZIERUNG. A setup window opens.
  3. Enter your Passwort (password).
  4. The window now offers to connect the Lexware app. Don't click Endgerät jetzt verbinden (connect device now). Click Andere Methode wählen (choose another method) instead.
  5. Lexware Office shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  6. If the camera won't read it, click ICH KANN DEN CODE NICHT SCANNEN (I can't scan the code) to get a code you type in yourself. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, and type it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  7. On the next page, enter the 6-digit code from Novaz to confirm.
  8. Lexware Office shows your backup code, the Ersatzcode. Save it (see below), then click FERTIG (done).

Lexware's help doesn't say how often its codes change or how long the typed key is. If Novaz won't accept the key you typed, scan the QR code instead: it carries the code settings with it.

Using the Lexware app as well

You can turn on the push method too. Lexware says this doesn't mean you need both at sign-in, and you can switch between them each time. If both are on, Lexware Office asks for the push prompt first, and you click ANDERE METHODE WÄHLEN to type a Novaz code instead (Lexware).

One backup code, and what it does

Lexware Office gives you a single Ersatzcode, not a list of backup codes. You can download it as a text file or copy it, for example into a password manager. Keep it somewhere other than your iPhone. With Novaz, it's your way back in if the phone is lost and you have no Novaz backup (iCloud backup or a backup file).

Using the code doesn't just let you in once. It signs you in and turns two-step sign-in off for the whole account, so you sign in with only your email and password afterwards (Lexware). Set it up again right away and save the new code.

If you lose the code while you can still sign in, open the two-step settings in your profile and choose EINEN NEUEN ERSATZCODE GENERIEREN (generate a new backup code), then enter your password. If you saved the old file and can't find it, Lexware suggests searching your files for "lexoffice_ersatzcode" (Lexware). More in 2FA backup codes.

When Lexware Office asks for a code

After your email address and password, every time, unless you tick Für die nächsten 90 Tage in diesem Browser nicht mehr nachfragen. (don't ask again in this browser for 90 days). That relies on a cookie, so a browser that clears cookies will ask again. To make every browser ask again sooner, use Vertrauenswürdigkeit aller gemerkten Geräte und Browser widerrufen (revoke trust in all remembered devices and browsers) at the bottom of the two-step settings (Lexware).

If Lexware Office rejects your code

Lexware's troubleshooting article blames wrong clock or time zone settings on the phone when push prompts fail, and tells you to set both automatically (Lexware). Authenticator codes depend on the clock too. On iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

Lexware's advice for a new phone, while you still have the old one: sign in as usual, turn two-step sign-in off in your profile, then turn it on again with the new phone (Lexware). Do this before you wipe the old iPhone, unless you restore Novaz on the new one from an iCloud backup or backup file. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

  1. At sign-in, click Andere Methode wählen.
  2. If the Lexware app is also set up and you still have it, use the push prompt.
  3. Otherwise choose ERSATZCODE EINLÖSEN UND ANMELDUNG IN ZWEI SCHRITTEN DEAKTIVIEREN (redeem backup code and turn off two-step sign-in), enter your Ersatzcode and click Bestätigen und anmelden (confirm and sign in).
  4. Without the code, contact Lexware Office Support. The help article gives help@lexware.de (Lexware).

Lexware doesn't say what proof Support asks for or how long it takes. It does offer account recovery details you can add to your profile ahead of time, which it says help it identify you if you can't get into your account (Lexware). More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

In your personal settings, open Anmeldung und Sicherheit (sign-in and security), then the row in the Anmeldung in zwei Schritten (Zwei-Faktor-Authentifizierung) section. Click the method you want to turn off and enter your password (Lexware). Then remove Lexware Office from Novaz: open it and tap Remove account.
