Missive is a shared inbox for teams: email, SMS, WhatsApp and chat handled together in one app. Before you look for its two-factor setting, check how you sign in, because Missive's own two-factor authentication (2FA) only applies to one kind of account. If you sign in with an email address and a password, you turn it on in Missive. If you sign in with Google or Apple, Missive sends you to Google's or Apple's own 2FA instead (Missive). Teams on the Business plan that use single sign-on (SSO) handle sign-in through their identity provider.

For a password account, the only method Missive's help describes is an authenticator app. It's optional, and the help names Authy and Google Authenticator as examples. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Missive steps come from Missive's own documentation, linked below, including the screenshot on its Security FAQ, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Missive account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Missive's Security FAQ lists these steps (Missive):

  1. In Missive, open Settings, then Login & Security.
  2. Type your account password when Missive asks for it.
  3. Click Enable two-factor authentication.
  4. A window titled Enable two-factor authentication shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it.
  5. Type the 6-digit code from Novaz in the Two-factor code field and click Enable.

If you're setting this up in Missive on the same iPhone that runs Novaz, take a screenshot of the QR code, then tap + and Choose a photo in Novaz. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.

The setup window in Missive's screenshot shows only the QR code, with no text key to type instead, and the help doesn't mention one. Plan to scan the code. If you do find a key, add it in Novaz with + and Enter key manually.

If you sign in with Google or Apple

Missive doesn't add its own code on top of Google or Apple sign-in. Its FAQ links to Google's and Apple's help for turning on 2FA there (Missive). If you'd rather use Missive's authenticator option, the FAQ says you can move from Google login to a password by clicking Set a password under Settings > Login & Security.

The reverse also matters. In the same settings screen, Missive warns that switching to Sign in with Google or Sign in with Apple updates your Missive email address and turns off email-and-password login. Missive asks you to confirm your password before you change any of these sign-in details (Missive).

For organization admins

Missive can't require 2FA from users on its Free, Starter or Productive plans. On the Business plan, admins can set up SAML SSO so everyone signs in through the company's identity provider, which Missive presents as its way to enforce a sign-in policy (Missive, Missive). Admins can see who has turned on 2FA: a 2FA badge appears next to those people in the user list.

No backup codes in the docs

Missive's documentation doesn't mention backup or recovery codes, a second method, or a way to switch the authenticator to a new phone. Before you rely on 2FA, look at the setup screens for any codes Missive offers, and save them away from your phone if it does. Novaz keys stay on your iPhone unless you turn on iCloud backup or export a backup file, so a saved code is your other way back in. See 2FA backup codes.

When Missive asks for a code

The help doesn't say when the code is requested. It does say that a Missive session ends after two weeks without use on a device, so a device you seldom open will ask you to sign in again (Missive). Expect a code then too.

If Missive rejects your code

Missive's help has no advice for a rejected code. Start with the iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz shows a warning when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Also make sure you're using the code from the Missive entry and that it hasn't just changed. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

Missive doesn't document how to move 2FA to a new phone. If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, restore it on the new iPhone and Missive comes along. Without one, while you still have the old phone, ask Missive Support how to reset the authenticator on your account, and keep the old phone until Missive is set up on the new one. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

Missive's documentation doesn't describe a recovery process for a lost authenticator or say what proof it asks for. Its general route for help is the Missive Support team at support@missiveapp.com (Missive). Write from the email address on your Missive account. If you're on a team, an admin of your organization may be able to help you reach Support. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

The help doesn't explain how to turn 2FA off. Look in Settings > Login & Security, where you turned it on.
