Nitro Type 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5

Nitro Type is a typing race game, and your Nitro account holds your racing records, achievements and math scores. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional. It only works with an authenticator app, and only on accounts that sign in with a Nitro Type username and password. Before you can turn it on, the account needs a verified email address (Nitro Type).
This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way. Nitro Type's own post names Authy and Google Authenticator, but it doesn't limit you to those.
How we checked this guide: the Nitro Type steps come from Nitro Type's own news post announcing 2FA, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. The post is still live on nitrotype.com, but its text only loads in a full web browser, so we read it in an archived copy saved on web.archive.org on May 21, 2023, a week after it was published. We haven't tested the steps on a Nitro Type account, and labels may have changed since 2023. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Who can use it
- Username and password accounts: yes. Nitro Type recommends it for every player who can use it.
- Google, Clever, ClassLink or Facebook sign-in: the post says these accounts don't need Nitro Type's 2FA. Your security then depends on that other account, so protect it instead (Nitro Type).
One warning in the post deserves attention if you've ever given your password to a friend or sibling: anyone who can sign in to your account can turn on 2FA themselves and lock you out. If someone else knows your password, change it before you set this up.
Step 1: verify your email address
Nitro Type won't offer 2FA until the account has a validated email (Nitro Type):
- Open My Settings and select Account.
- Enter your email address and your Nitro Type password, then click Update Account Settings.
- Refresh the page and select Account again.
- Click Send Email Validation.
- Open the email from Nitro Type and click the link in it.
Step 2: turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
- Go to My Settings and select Enable 2FA.
- Click Enable Two-Factor Authentication. Nitro Type shows a QR code.
- In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the code. If Nitro Type is open on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- If you can't scan it, Nitro Type also gives you a secret key to type in. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, put "Nitro Type" in Service, and paste or type the key as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- On the next screen, enter your Nitro Type password and the current code from Novaz, then click Secure My Account.
- Nitro Type shows backup codes. Save them before you leave the page.
The post doesn't say how long the codes are or how often they change. Scanning the QR code is the safer route, because it passes those settings to your app. A typed key always gets 6-digit codes that change every 30 seconds.
Your backup codes
Nitro Type gives you backup codes at the end of setup and tells you to keep a copy and never share them (Nitro Type). The post doesn't say how many there are, whether each works once, or how to get new ones.
Keep them even if you back up Novaz with iCloud backup or a backup file: they get you in if the phone is lost and that backup is missing or out of date. Write the codes down or keep them in a password manager, somewhere away from the phone. If a parent helps manage the account, they're a good person to hold the paper copy. More in 2FA backup codes.
When Nitro Type asks for a code
Nitro Type asks for a code whenever you sign in from a new device (Nitro Type). The post doesn't say how Nitro Type decides a device is new, so expect the prompt on any computer or browser you haven't used before.
If Nitro Type rejects your code
The post has no advice for this. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when your clock is 15 seconds or more off. Also make sure you're typing the code under the Nitro Type entry, not another account. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
The post doesn't describe a way to move 2FA to a new phone. In Novaz, an iCloud backup or a backup file lets you restore Nitro Type on the new iPhone; without one, a new phone means setting it up again. Keep the old phone and your backup codes until the new one is working. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Sign in with one of your backup codes in place of the app code. The post doesn't say what happens if you've lost both, and it doesn't describe an account recovery process. The only contact route we found is Nitro Type's Support - FAQs and Contact Form page (Nitro Type). That page also only loads in a full browser, so we couldn't read what it says about 2FA.
Before you send a message, read Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Turning 2FA off
The post doesn't explain how to turn 2FA off. If you do turn it off, open the Nitro Type entry in Novaz and tap Remove account afterwards, not before.
