Republic is an investing platform for startup and private deals, with its own Republic Wallet. Its two-factor authentication (2FA) is documented in pieces: one older republic.com help article shows the setup screen, a security page says where the setting lives, and the Republic Europe help center has its own article with different rules. None of them makes 2FA mandatory. This guide collects what they confirm and says where they're silent. The steps use Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Republic steps come from Republic's own help pages, security page and terms, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. republic.com blocks automated readers, so we read its pages in archived copies on web.archive.org (dates given below); the Republic Europe help center was read directly. We haven't tested any of this on a Republic account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

What we couldn't read

Republic's help center also has an article on turning 2FA off and one explaining what a global Republic account means for existing accounts. republic.com refused our requests and no archived copy of either article exists, so this guide doesn't cover them. If you have used both republic.com and Republic Europe, check those two articles in the help center before you change anything.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Republic's security page says you turn 2FA on in your account settings (Republic, archived copy from October 13, 2026). A republic.com help article recommends doing it before you add a digital asset wallet, and shows the setup screen (Republic, archived copy from April 15, 2025). Based on that screenshot:

  1. Open the screen titled Protect your account. Republic doesn't spell out the menu path to it beyond "account settings".
  2. Under Open authenticator app, Republic says any authenticator app works.
  3. Under Begin generating codes, Republic shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  4. Under Verify your code, type the 6-digit code from Novaz and select Enable.

The screen also has a Skip this for now link. The screenshot doesn't show a text key for typing by hand, and the help doesn't mention one. If Republic gives you one, tap +, then Enter key manually in Novaz and paste it as the Setup key (What is a 2FA setup key?).

Once it's on, the screen says you'll need your password and a code from the app every time you sign in.

Republic Europe accounts work differently

The Republic Europe help article describes a separate system. There, 2FA protects withdrawals from your Investment Account and changes to sensitive profile details such as your password, and the article states that it isn't used at sign-in (Republic, updated May 5, 2025):

  1. Go to the security tab of your Republic Europe Profile Settings.
  2. Enter your mobile number and confirm the SMS code. Text messages are the default method.
  3. In the same security tab, switch to a mobile app instead. Republic Europe recommends this, because text messages can be intercepted. Add the account to Novaz the way described above.

The article doesn't say whether you can choose the app without giving a phone number first.

If you can't open the app later, the article says you can still have the code sent by SMS. Why an app beats SMS is covered in Authenticator app vs. SMS.

Save the backup codes

Republic's terms refer to backup codes handed out during 2FA setup (Republic, archived copy from April 1, 2024). The Republic Europe article also talks about recovery codes. Neither page says how many you get or how to make new ones.

If you lose your iPhone and have no Novaz backup (iCloud backup or a backup file), these codes are your only way back in without Republic's help. Store them in a password manager or on paper, away from the phone. See 2FA backup codes.

If Republic rejects your code

Republic's pages give no advice on rejected codes. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock: open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

Republic doesn't document a way to move 2FA to a new phone. With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone. Without one, set Republic up again on the new phone while you can still sign in on the old one. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

On republic.com, use a backup code. Without the app and the codes, Republic's terms say you'll have to prove your identity again, which may mean sending more personal details or taking a liveness test. Republic can refuse, though the terms say it generally does so only when it suspects fraud or misconduct (Republic). The terms don't say how long this takes.

On Republic Europe, the rule is stricter: the help article warns that support can't turn off 2FA for you if you lose your phone and your recovery codes (Republic). For anything else, Republic Europe's Community Support team is at eur-support@republic.com, on weekdays from 9am to 6pm, and aims to reply within 24 to 48 hours (Republic).
