Smarkets is a betting exchange, so your account holds a balance, your open bets and your verified identity. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional there, but Smarkets recommends it in its password help (Smarkets). The only method its help describes is a code from an authenticator app, typed in after your email address and password. There's no text-message option in the help, and you can only switch 2FA on or off from the desktop website, not the mobile app (Smarkets).

The steps below use Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Smarkets names a few other apps, but any authenticator app that makes time-based codes works the same way, Novaz included.

How we checked this guide: the Smarkets steps come from Smarkets' own help center, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026 through the help center's public article feed, because the web pages refused automated requests. We haven't tested them on a Smarkets account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Before you start

Smarkets' 2FA article was last updated in August 2024, and its screenshot dates from 2020, so the screens you see today may look different. Two things in it matter before you begin:

  • Use a computer. The article starts every step with a visit to the desktop site.
  • Smarkets' help doesn't mention backup or recovery codes. If you lose your phone, the documented way back in is an email to support with your ID (see below). Make sure you can still get into the email address on your Smarkets account.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Smarkets' help describes these steps (Smarkets):

  1. Sign in to smarkets.com in a desktop browser.
  2. Open the Settings tab and choose Login. The page is at smarkets.com/account/settings/login.
  3. Select Enable two-factor authentication. A pop-up window opens with instructions.
  4. Smarkets shows a barcode (a QR code). In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the iPhone's camera at your computer screen.
  5. Type the one-time password Novaz shows into the pop-up to finish.

Smarkets' help says its codes last 30 seconds, which matches what Novaz makes. The article only talks about scanning and doesn't say whether the pop-up also shows a text key. If you see one and the camera won't read the barcode, tap +, then Enter key manually in Novaz, fill in Service (for example, Smarkets) and paste or type the key as the Setup key. More on that in What is a 2FA setup key?

If you're doing this on your iPhone rather than a computer, take a screenshot of the barcode and use Choose a photo after tapping +. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone. Bear in mind the help expects the desktop site, so a computer is the safer route.

Signing in with 2FA on

Enter your email address and password as usual and select Sign In. Smarkets then opens a pop-up asking you to verify your identity. Open Novaz and type the current code for Smarkets (Smarkets). The help doesn't say whether Smarkets can remember a trusted browser, or whether it asks for a code anywhere other than sign-in.

If Smarkets rejects your code

Smarkets' help has no advice for codes that don't work. Because each code only lasts 30 seconds, a clock that's off is the most likely cause. On your iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz shows a warning when the clock is 15 seconds or more out. If the code is close to running out, wait for the next one before typing it. Other causes are covered in Authenticator code not working?

Also watch your sign-in attempts. Smarkets says too many failed logins can block an account, and then you'd need to contact support@smarkets.com (Smarkets).

New phone, lost phone or stolen phone

Smarkets treats all three the same way. Its help says to send your proof of ID to support@smarkets.com, from the email address registered on your Smarkets account, and the support team will turn off 2FA for you (Smarkets). Once that's done, sign in and set it up again on the new phone. The help doesn't say how long the reset takes.

For the ID itself, Smarkets' page on verification documents lists a passport, a photo driving license or a national identity card as accepted proof of ID (Smarkets). That page is about account verification in general, so support may ask for something else in a 2FA case.

If you still have your old phone and can sign in, a simpler route is to turn 2FA off yourself (below), then turn it on again and scan the new barcode with the new phone. If you use Novaz's iCloud backup or a backup file, you can skip both routes for a new phone: restore your accounts on it and the codes keep working. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone and Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

On the desktop site, open the Settings tab, choose Login and click Disable (Smarkets). Afterward, open Smarkets in Novaz and tap Remove account, since the old codes won't be needed.
