Spotify for Artists 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
Spotify for Artists has no login of its own: you sign in with your personal Spotify account (Spotify). Two-factor authentication, which Spotify calls 2-step verification, is set on that account's page, and Spotify says it's "only available to Spotify for Artists users right now" (Spotify). It's optional but strongly encouraged, and works with an authenticator app, text messages, or both, plus backup codes. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Spotify for Artists steps come from Spotify's own help pages, linked below, which we read on October 19, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Spotify account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Before you start
- Use the right Spotify account, the one with access to your artist or label team. If Spotify for Artists asks you to claim your profile again, you're probably on a different account (Spotify). That would also explain a missing 2-step verification option.
- Spotify Payouts is stricter. For podcast and video creators paid through Spotify Payouts, it's required after earning $1,000 USD or more in a month, and payouts are held if it isn't on within 30 days (Spotify).
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
Spotify's help describes these steps (Spotify):
- Sign in to your Spotify account page at accounts.spotify.com.
- Select 2-step verification, then Set up. You may need to sign in again.
- Choose the authenticator app option. You can add text messages later.
- Spotify shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code. If the page is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Or enter Spotify's activation code, which is the setup key: in Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, and type it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Enter the code from Novaz, then save your backup codes. Spotify emails you once it's on.
Spotify's help doesn't give its code length or interval, so scan if you can: the QR code passes those settings to your app, while a typed key always gives 6-digit, 30-second codes.
Save your backup codes
Download or save your backup codes during setup. Each one works once. Keep them private, and on a shared computer print or copy them instead of downloading them (Spotify).
Novaz's keys exist only on your iPhone unless you back them up, so hold on to these codes. Store them in a password manager or on paper. See 2FA backup codes.
To see them again or replace them, select 2-step verification, then Edit on your account page. Under the backup codes, select Show codes, then Generate new codes if you think someone else has seen them.
When Spotify asks for a code
Spotify asks for a code every time you sign in to Spotify for Artists or other Spotify web pages (Spotify). The help doesn't mention a way to trust a device.
If you set up both methods, Spotify texts you by default. To use Novaz instead, select Want to log in another way? on the sign-in screen.
If Spotify rejects your code
If you see Too many attempts, please try again later, Spotify's help says to wait 30 minutes before trying again (Spotify).
Otherwise, check the iPhone's clock: open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
Do this while you still have the old phone. On your account page, select 2-step verification, then Edit, then Change to link a new device or authenticator app. You'll sign in again before confirming, and Spotify emails you afterward (Spotify).
Without a Novaz backup, you scan Spotify's new QR code on the new one. With iCloud backup or a backup file, you can skip the change and restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Spotify's help gives these routes (Spotify):
- A backup code. On the sign-in screen, select Want to log in another way? and enter one.
- A text message, if you also set up SMS.
- Spotify support, if neither works, through Spotify's contact page, which starts with an AI-powered tool. Spotify doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long it takes.
Once you're in, use Edit and Change to link Novaz on your new phone, and generate fresh backup codes.
If an account can't be recovered at all, Spotify's artist help says to create a new one and have another team admin invite it, or to contact Spotify if you were the only admin (Spotify). That's one more reason to keep a second admin on your team. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Turning 2FA off
On your account page, select 2-step verification, then Edit, then Remove. Spotify also says to delete any backup codes you downloaded (Spotify). Then open Spotify in Novaz and tap Remove account.
