Sumo Logic is a cloud platform for logs, metrics and security analytics, and your Sumo Logic account belongs to your company's organization there. Sumo Logic calls its two-factor authentication 2-Step Verification. It works with any time-based (TOTP) authenticator app, and it's optional unless an administrator in your organization has made it required (Sumo Logic). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Sumo Logic steps come from Sumo Logic's own documentation, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Sumo Logic account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Before you start: SSO and required policies

  • You sign in through SAML or SSO. Then Sumo Logic's 2-Step Verification isn't used at all. It only covers sign-in with a Sumo Logic username and password, so any second factor comes from your company's identity provider (Sumo Logic).
  • Your organization requires it. Sumo Logic walks you through the setup the first time you sign in (Sumo Logic). If you have accounts in more than one organization and any of them requires it, you'll be asked for a code at every sign-in, because the strictest setting wins (Sumo Logic).

Turn on 2-Step Verification with an authenticator app

Sumo Logic's user documentation describes these steps (Sumo Logic):

  1. Sign in to Sumo Logic. In the new UI, select your username in the top menu, then Preferences. In the Classic UI, select your username in the main menu, then Preferences.
  2. Click Enable 2-Step Verification. A QR code appears.
  3. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen. If Sumo Logic is open on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  4. If scanning doesn't work, Sumo Logic shows a code below the QR code that you can type by hand. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, and paste or type it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  5. Enter two consecutive codes from Novaz: type the current code, wait for Novaz to show a new one, then type that too. Sumo Logic uses the pair to sync with your app's clock.
  6. Click Continue.

Sumo Logic's pages don't say how many digits its codes have or how often they change. Scanning the QR code is the safer choice, because it passes those settings to Novaz. A key typed by hand always gives 6-digit codes every 30 seconds.

Save the five backup codes

Right after setup, Sumo Logic shows five backup codes. Each one works once, for a sign-in when you can't reach your phone. Unlike many services, Sumo Logic keeps them visible on your Preferences page, and Generate New Codes there gives you more (Sumo Logic). Sumo Logic suggests printing them rather than keeping them in a text file.

Unless you've backed up Novaz with iCloud backup or a backup file, its keys exist only on your iPhone, so these codes are your way back in if that iPhone is lost. More in 2FA backup codes.

Signing in

After your username and password, Sumo Logic asks for the 2-Step Verification code from your app. If your administrator has turned on the Remember Browser option, you'll see a checkbox to skip the code on that browser for 30 days (Sumo Logic). The user page calls it Remember this computer for 30 days, and the admin page calls it Remember this browser for 30 days, so the wording on your screen may be either. If the option is off, you enter a code every time.

If Sumo Logic rejects your code

You get three tries. After the third wrong code, Sumo Logic asks for two consecutive codes, as at setup (Sumo Logic).

If codes keep failing, check your iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Moving to a new phone

Sumo Logic has a built-in way to switch devices while you're signed in. Go to Preferences and click Change Device under My Security Settings. Scan the new QR code with the app on the new phone, enter two consecutive codes, enter your Sumo Logic password, then click Continue and Save (Sumo Logic).

If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can skip this and restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead. Without one, do this while the old phone still works. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

First, use one of your five backup codes to sign in. Then use Change Device to set up a new phone, and check Preferences for your remaining codes.

Without backup codes, the route goes through your own organization, not Sumo Logic support. Sumo Logic's documentation says to contact your Sumo Logic administrator (Sumo Logic). An admin who can manage users and roles can open Administration > Users, click the More Actions icon next to your name and choose Disable 2-Step Verification. That resets your account to how it was before setup. If your organization requires 2-Step Verification, you'll set it up again at your next sign-in (Sumo Logic). The documentation doesn't say what to do if you're the only administrator.

Turning it off

If your organization leaves it optional, go to Preferences, click Disable 2-Step Verification, enter your Sumo Logic password and click Save (Sumo Logic). Then open the account in Novaz and tap Remove account.
