Telnyx is a communications platform for voice, messaging and phone numbers, and the place you manage all of it is the Mission Control Portal. Telnyx lets you add two-factor authentication (2FA) to your Portal sign-in, so a stolen password alone isn't enough to get in. Telnyx's help center doesn't say 2FA is required. It offers two methods: an authenticator app (TOTP), or codes sent by SMS, voice call or WhatsApp. Telnyx recommends the authenticator app where you can use it, because it doesn't rely on text or call delivery (Telnyx).

This guide covers your own Portal account, not Telnyx Verify, the product that adds verification codes to your own apps. We use Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone in the steps, but any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Telnyx steps come from Telnyx's own help center article, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Telnyx account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

Telnyx's help article, last updated in July 2026, gives these steps. It describes the screens loosely, so the Portal wording may differ (Telnyx).

  1. Sign in to Mission Control Portal.
  2. Go to Account and open the security settings.
  3. Turn on Two-Factor Authentication.
  4. Pick the TOTP (authenticator app) option.
  5. The Portal shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the Portal is open on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  6. Type the code Novaz shows into the Portal to finish turning on TOTP.
  7. Save the backup codes the Portal shows you (more below).

Telnyx's article isn't sure the Portal offers a typed key: it says to check whether a manual setup option is there if your app can't scan the code. If you do find a key, tap + in Novaz, then Enter key manually, and put it in Setup key. Telnyx asks you to keep that key as private as a password. See What is a 2FA setup key?

The article doesn't say how many digits Telnyx's codes have or how often they change. Scanning the QR code is the safer route, because the code carries those settings to Novaz. A typed key always gets 6 digits every 30 seconds.

Save the backup codes right away

Telnyx shows your backup codes one time only, right after setup, and each code works once (Telnyx). If you close that screen without saving them, Telnyx's help doesn't describe a way to show them again or make new ones. Keep them away from the phone you use for codes.

Keep them even if you back up Novaz. Without iCloud backup or a backup file, Novaz's keys exist only on your iPhone, so the backup codes are your way back in if that phone is lost. See 2FA backup codes.

Signing in afterwards

Once TOTP is on, the Portal asks for the current code from your app each time you sign in, after your password. Telnyx's help doesn't mention a way to trust a device and skip the code.

The 2FA setting covers signing in to the Portal in a browser. It doesn't protect your API keys, which Telnyx tells you to store, rotate and clean up on their own (Telnyx).

Company sign-in (SSO)

If your organization signs you in to the Portal through SSO/SAML, the second step may be run by your company's identity provider instead of Telnyx's own 2FA settings. In that case, follow your company's rules for it (Telnyx).

If Telnyx rejects your code

Telnyx's troubleshooting list says to check that you picked the Telnyx entry in your app, that you typed the code currently showing, and that your device's date and time are set automatically. If none of that helps, sign in with a backup code (Telnyx).

On iPhone the clock fix is Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. After several failed tries, Telnyx may show an error about too many requests or login attempts. Wait a while before trying again. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

Telnyx's advice is to deal with 2FA before the old phone is gone: make sure your backup codes still work, add Telnyx to the new authenticator before you remove it from the old one, and test a sign-in before you retire the old device (Telnyx).

With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone and the Telnyx codes keep working. Without one, a new iPhone means setting Telnyx up again on it. Telnyx's article doesn't explain how to swap the authenticator for a new one. Look in the Portal's security settings while you can still sign in with the old phone. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

Use one of your backup codes to sign in. If you have no app and no backup codes, Telnyx's route is to email Telnyx Support at support@telnyx.com, who will take you through account recovery (Telnyx). The article doesn't say what proof Support asks for or how long recovery takes. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

Telnyx's help article doesn't describe how to turn 2FA off or switch methods. It does suggest moving from SMS to TOTP if text or call codes aren't reliable for you.
