TaxDome is practice management software for accounting and tax firms: staff use it to run the practice, and clients sign in to the firm's TaxDome portal. Every email-and-password sign-in already ends with a 6-digit code sent by email. Two-factor authentication (2FA) with an authenticator app replaces that email code with one made on your phone (TaxDome).

For most people it's optional. A firm owner or admin can make it mandatory, though, for the firm's team, for its clients, or for both (TaxDome). If your firm has done that, you'll see a prompt in the portal or the setup screen when you sign in. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the TaxDome steps come from TaxDome's own help center, linked below. Its site turned away our automated reader, so on October 21, 2026 we read the pages as archived copies on web.archive.org, saved between March 13 and April 19, 2026. We haven't tested the steps on a TaxDome account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

You can do this on the web or in the TaxDome mobile app. Once it's on, TaxDome asks for an app code on the web portal, the mobile app and the Windows app (TaxDome).

On the web:

  1. Click your profile at the top right and go to Account settings.
  2. Turn on the Two-factor authentication toggle, enter your TaxDome password, and click Submit.
  3. TaxDome shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen.
  4. If you can't scan it, TaxDome also shows what it calls a secret key. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, enter TaxDome as the Service, and type the key as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  5. Type the 6-digit code from Novaz and click Confirm.

TaxDome's help says its codes change every 30 seconds, which matches what Novaz makes from a typed key.

In the TaxDome mobile app, tap your profile at the top of the screen, select Security settings, turn on Two-factor authentication and confirm your password. The app gives you a secret key rather than a QR code. On the same iPhone, copy it, open Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, and paste it as the Setup key. Then enter the Novaz code in TaxDome to finish.

Add SMS backup, because there are no backup codes

TaxDome's help pages don't mention backup or recovery codes. The backup it offers is a phone number for text messages. To add one on the web, go to Account settings, turn on Backup authentication (SMS), enter your password, click Submit, then enter your number with its country code and confirm the texted code. In the mobile app, the toggle is Backup auth method by text/SMS under Security settings (TaxDome).

SMS backup isn't available in the EU. If you're there, or you'd rather not use text messages, your firm owner or admin is your way back in (see below). Novaz can only help if you've made a backup: without iCloud backup or a backup file, the TaxDome key exists only on your iPhone.

When TaxDome asks for a code

After your email and password, TaxDome asks for the 6-digit code from your app. Check Remember this device for 30 days to skip the prompt on that device for a month, then click Verify (TaxDome). If you sign in with Google, TaxDome's help says you don't get the email code, and its pages don't say whether the app code still applies (TaxDome).

If TaxDome rejects your code

TaxDome's first suggestion is to wait for the next code and try again. Its troubleshooting page also points to the clock: codes are based on UTC time, so a phone that's out of sync makes codes TaxDome won't accept (TaxDome). On iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. If it still fails, team members and clients should contact their firm owner or admin. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

TaxDome's help explains how to move codes with Google Authenticator's export feature. Novaz has its own: export a backup file with Settings > Backup > Export to file… and open it on the new iPhone with Import from file…, or use iCloud backup. Either way the TaxDome codes keep working. Without a backup, you'll set TaxDome up again on the new iPhone. While the old phone still works, turn off Two-factor authentication in Account settings and turn it back on with the new phone. If your firm requires 2FA, you can't turn it off yourself (TaxDome), so ask your firm owner or admin to reset it. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

Who helps depends on your role (TaxDome):

  • Team members and clients: if you set up SMS backup, choose Get code via SMS on the code screen, a minute after your last request. Otherwise, ask your firm owner or admin to reset your two-factor authentication. You'll get email codes at the next sign-in, or the setup screen if your firm requires the app.
  • Firm owners: send TaxDome a 2FA reset request, through the form linked from its login troubleshooting page. TaxDome support checks your identity before restoring access. The help doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long this takes.

Admins find Reset two-factor authentication under Settings > Team & plans > Team members, in the three-dot menu next to the person's name. For clients, it's on the Info tab of the client profile (TaxDome).

Turning 2FA off

In Account settings, turn off Two-factor authentication, enter your password, and click Submit. TaxDome goes back to email codes. This isn't possible when your firm requires the authenticator app (TaxDome). Afterwards, remove the TaxDome account in Novaz: open it and tap Remove account.
