Clover 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Your Clover account is the login for the Clover web dashboard, where businesses handle sales, refunds and staff. Clover may prompt you to turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) when you sign in. Its UK FAQ also makes 2FA a condition for two things: issuing refunds in the Transactions app, and changing the bank account information on your Clover account (Clover). Codes can come by text message or from an authenticator app. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, and any other authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Clover steps come from Clover's own pages, linked below: its UK help-centre FAQ, its developer documentation and its blog, which we read on October 20, 2026. Clover's main two-factor help article only loads inside a web browser, so we couldn't read it for this guide, and your dashboard may use slightly different labels. We haven't tested the steps on a Clover account. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
If Clover doesn't ask you to set up 2FA when you sign in, its FAQ gives this route (Clover):
- Sign in to your Clover account in a web browser.
- Go to Setup > Account Settings > Two-Factor Authentication. The same FAQ also points to your profile, so look there if you don't see a Setup menu.
- Choose Authenticator app. Clover shows a QR code.
- In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen. If the QR code is on the iPhone you're holding, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Type the code from Novaz into Clover and select Next.
Clover's developer documentation describes the same setup at clover.com with other labels: the profile menu, then User Settings, then Turn on Two Factor Authentication, a choice between SMS and Authenticator app, and Got it at the end. Only one method can be active at a time (Clover).
None of the merchant pages we read mention a text key, so plan to scan the QR code. If Clover does show a key, tap + in Novaz, then Enter key manually, and paste it into Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
Download the recovery codes
The developer page says to select Download in the Two-Factor Authentication section the first time you set up 2FA. You get a .txt file of backup recovery codes, meant for when your phone isn't available (Clover). The UK FAQ doesn't mention them, so check that section after setup.
Unless you turn on iCloud backup or export a backup file in Novaz, its keys exist only on your iPhone, so these codes are your way back in if that phone is gone. Store the file somewhere else. More in 2FA backup codes.
Employees and sign-in prompts
Staff who use the dashboard have their own logins, and Clover says "each employee has their own access and MFA set up". New employees are prompted to set it up after creating their password, and staff without a work phone can use an authenticator app on a computer (Clover).
The same FAQ says a code is needed each time you sign in. An older Clover blog post, from 2019 and last updated in 2023, mentions an option to enter a code only every 14 days, and says 2FA spares you the 90-day password change (Clover). Newer pages don't confirm either point.
If Clover rejects your code
The Clover pages we read don't cover rejected codes. The usual cause is the phone's clock: on your iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
Clover doesn't describe moving to a new phone. The developer page shows Turn On and Turn Off buttons in the Two-Factor Authentication section for changing which method is active (Clover). If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead. Otherwise, make the change while the old phone still works: sign in, then set up the authenticator app again with the new iPhone, or use text messages for a while. Switching 2FA off in between would block refunds and bank changes. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Sign in with a recovery code, then set up the authenticator again. Without codes, the Clover pages we could read don't describe a reset, so contact Clover support and ask them to reset two-factor authentication on your login. Clover doesn't say what proof it needs or how long it takes. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Developer accounts
The Global Developer Dashboard works differently. Multi-factor authentication is required for everyone and set up at your first sign-in. A session lasts 24 hours, and there are no recovery codes. To replace your app, go to User Settings, open the Two-Factor Authentication tab and choose Add Method. If you can't scan the QR code, there's an enter a text code instead link (Clover, Clover). For problems, Clover names its Developer Relations team at developer-relations@devrel.clover.com.
