CoinPayments 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

CoinPayments is a crypto payment processor that merchants use to take payments in Bitcoin and other coins. By default, a CoinPayments account signs you in with a code sent by email. You can swap that for an authenticator app, and CoinPayments' setup guide says to do it right after you sign up (CoinPayments).
CoinPayments runs a legacy platform and a newer one side by side, as separate systems with separate accounts (CoinPayments). Each has its own 2FA setting, so if you use both, you set it up twice. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the CoinPayments steps come from CoinPayments' own support wizard, FAQ and official blog tutorials, including a screenshot in one of them, all linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a CoinPayments account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA on the legacy platform
The legacy tutorial says to go to Account > Account Settings, open the Login & Security tab, and change the 2FA method from email to an authenticator app (CoinPayments). Its screenshot shows the tab:
- Find the 2 Factor Authentication menu. It has two choices: Email, which emails you a code at every sign-in, and Linked 2FA Account(s), which uses an authenticator app.
- The menu reads "none linked" until you link an app. Below it, a link (here) opens the page where you add linked devices. Open it and link Novaz first.
- If the linking page shows a QR code, open Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- CoinPayments also shows a code and asks you to save it. Write it down and keep it away from your phone. It's the only backup the help pages mention (more below).
- Back on Login & Security, choose Linked 2FA Account(s) in the 2 Factor Authentication menu and select Update Account.
CoinPayments doesn't document the linking page, so we can't give its labels. The screenshot is old, so the tab may look different now.
Turn on 2FA on the new platform
CoinPayments' 2025 guide for the new platform says to set up Google Authenticator as soon as you sign up, and lists a 2FA Method setting under Account > Settings where you change or switch your method (CoinPayments). It doesn't list the screens after that. Use Novaz instead: scan the QR code as above, and save any key the setup shows you.
Here 2FA matters beyond sign-in: every withdrawal and outgoing transfer needs it (CoinPayments), and you also confirm settings such as Auto-Sweep with your 2FA method (CoinPayments).
Typing the key instead of scanning
CoinPayments doesn't say how long its key is or how many digits its codes have, so scan the QR code when you can: it carries the code settings. To type the key, tap +, then Enter key manually, and put it in Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
Sharing one account in a team
For businesses that share one login, CoinPayments suggests capturing the QR code or key during setup, letting each person add it to their own app, then deleting that copy (CoinPayments). Treat it like a password while it exists.
If CoinPayments rejects your code
CoinPayments doesn't give advice for rejected authenticator codes. Check your iPhone's clock first: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Entering wrong sign-in details too many times can lock you out for 15 to 60 minutes, and CoinPayments says it can't lift that lockout; you have to wait (CoinPayments). More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
CoinPayments doesn't describe a phone switch. If you use iCloud backup or a backup file in Novaz, restore your accounts on the new iPhone and the codes carry on. Otherwise, use the code you saved at setup: in Novaz on the new iPhone, tap +, then Enter key manually. Keep the old phone until the new one works. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
The saved code is your way back in: CoinPayments' support wizard says to enter it through your app's manual option, then sign in as usual (CoinPayments).
Without that code, you need a 2FA reset from support, and it takes at least a week. CoinPayments describes it like this (CoinPayments):
- In the support wizard, open Account & Security, then 2FA Resets, and post a support ticket. Use the support code the wizard gives you, write in English, and use your account's email address.
- Wait out the 7-day security waiting period.
- After 7 days, reply to your ticket to confirm the request, and support resets your 2FA.
If you let more than 14 days pass after the waiting period before you reply, you have to start over. A password reset doesn't clear 2FA problems (CoinPayments).
An older CoinPayments post adds that if you've also lost the account's email address, support can help only if you completed identity verification (KYC) or set a recovery email (CoinPayments). CoinPayments doesn't say whether this reset applies to new-platform accounts. The new-platform guide only mentions tickets through Account > Support, which needs you signed in (CoinPayments).
