Con Edison 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app for My Account
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
My Account is where Con Edison customers pay the bill, check energy use and start, move or stop service. The same login also opens the Building & Remodeling Project Center (Con Edison). Steam customers sign in on a separate site, which this guide doesn't cover (Con Edison).
At Con Edison, two-step verification isn't a setting you switch on later. Every new login must choose a second verification method while it's being created: a text message, a phone call, Google Authenticator or Okta Verify, or a security question if you have no mobile number (Con Edison).
This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. The option is labeled Google Authenticator, but it gives you an ordinary barcode and secret key, so Novaz or any other authenticator app reads it the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Con Edison steps come from Con Edison's own pages, linked below: the registration page and its built-in instructions, the sign-in pages, and two PDF user guides. We read them on October 20, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Con Edison account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
You pick the method during registration (Con Edison, Con Edison):
- On the Log In page, select Register. Under Who is Registering?, enter your name and email address and select Submit. Then follow the link in Con Edison's email. A Con Edison portal guide says the link works for 7 days (Con Edison).
- On Create Your Profile, under Set a Password, choose a password of 12 to 30 characters with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter and a number.
- Under Choose a Second Verification, fill in Mobile Phone Number. The Authentication Options list appears only once the number is valid. Checking I don't have a mobile number gets you a security question instead, with no app option.
- In Authentication Options, choose Google Authenticator, then Apple iPhone under Select your device type (this only changes the app store link). Skip Okta Verify: its instructions are written for Okta's own app.
- Con Edison shows a barcode. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code. If the barcode is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Can't scan it? Select Can't scan? to see the key under Code. Con Edison asks for a username plus the key in a Secret Key field. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually: Con Edison as the Service, your email as the Account (optional), the key as the Setup key. Then select Continue. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Under Enter code displayed in the application:, type the current Novaz code in Code and select Submit.
Con Edison doesn't publish how many digits its codes have or how often they change. The barcode carries those settings to your app, so scan it when you can. A typed key always gives 6-digit codes every 30 seconds in Novaz.
Already registered?
Con Edison's public pages only cover choosing the method at registration. The My Account page says Your Profile holds your security settings (Con Edison), but that page is behind the sign-in, and nothing public shows whether you can switch to an app there.
Con Edison's Building Energy Usage Portal guide, which shows the same registration screens, says the method you pick keeps providing your codes and can't be changed (Con Edison). Look in Your Profile first. If there's no app option, the FAQ sends sign-in problems other than a forgotten password to 1-800-752-6633 (Con Edison).
When Con Edison asks for a code
Con Edison asks for a code when it needs to authorize the computer or device you're signing in from (Con Edison). The current sign-in page titles that screen Verify Your Identity (Con Edison). The portal guide calls it Extra Verification. Type the Novaz code and select Submit. Con Edison doesn't say how often a device it already knows is asked again.
If Con Edison rejects your code
During setup, a wrong code brings an error asking you to "try again or choose another verification method" (Con Edison). Before switching methods, check your iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More fixes are in Authenticator code not working?
No backup codes, and changing phones
Con Edison's pages mention no backup or recovery codes, and no way to move the second verification to a new phone. In Novaz, iCloud backup or a backup file lets you restore your accounts on the new iPhone. Without one, keep the old iPhone until Con Edison, at 1-800-752-6633, has told you how to set up the new one. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
There's no published self-service fix. Unlock Account sends a code by Email or SMS to unlock a locked login (Con Edison), and Reset Password works by Email or Text Message, the text option only if you gave a mobile number at registration (Con Edison). Neither page says it gets you past the second verification.
Otherwise, call 1-800-752-6633, the number Con Edison's FAQ and sign-in error messages give. Con Edison doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long a reset takes. See Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
