Sonic 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app for Member Tools

Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
Sonic, the internet and phone provider, protects its Member Tools site with what it calls 2-Step Verification. Member Tools at members.sonic.net is where you manage your Sonic account, and the same feature lets business and enterprise customers give several employees their own controlled access to it (Sonic). Sonic's help doesn't say that 2-Step Verification is required for anything. You can add three kinds of second step: a code generator app, a text message, or an automated phone call that reads you a code.
This guide covers the app option. We use Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Sonic steps come from Sonic's own help center and support page, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. The help center blocked plain page downloads, and the archived copy on web.archive.org didn't include the article text, so we read the article through the help center's public article feed on help.sonic.com. Sonic last edited the article in April 2026. We haven't tested the steps on a Sonic account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
Sonic's article describes these steps (Sonic):
- Sign in to Member Tools and open the Member Information page. On Sonic's support page, the link to it is Manage Contact Info (Sonic).
- Select Add Authenticator.
- Give the device a name, such as "iPhone Novaz", so you can tell it apart later.
- Sonic shows a 16-character key, with a QR code in the middle of the screen. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- If you'd rather type the key, tap +, then Enter key manually in Novaz. Fill in Service (for example, Sonic), Account if you want, and the 16 characters as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Novaz shows a code. Type it into the Confirm Auth code field in your browser.
If the code is accepted, the app is linked to your account. The next time you sign in to Member Tools, Sonic asks for a 6-digit code from the app.
Sonic's page doesn't say how often its codes change. A 16-character key is long enough for Novaz's manual entry, which makes 6-digit codes every 30 seconds. Scanning the QR code is still the safer choice, because the code carries the settings with it.
Text and call codes
Sonic also offers codes by text message (Add SMS Number, for a 10-digit cell number) and by automated call (Add Telephone Number, for a landline or a mobile). Sonic says those codes stay valid for at least 30 minutes, which is much longer than an app code (Sonic). The page doesn't explain whether you can choose one of these at sign-in when your phone with the app isn't handy. For how app codes and text codes compare, see Authenticator app vs SMS.
No backup codes mentioned
Sonic's article doesn't mention backup or recovery codes, and it doesn't describe how to remove an authenticator or turn 2-Step Verification off. With Novaz, that matters: unless you turn on iCloud backup or export a backup file, the iPhone is the only copy of your Sonic key.
If Sonic rejects your code
Sonic's help has no advice on rejected codes. App codes depend on the time, so check your iPhone's clock first: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when your clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
Sonic doesn't document moving an authenticator to a new phone, or removing an old one. Its setup asks you to name each device, which hints that more than one can be linked, but the article doesn't confirm it. Keep the old iPhone until the new one works, and ask Sonic Support (below) if you can't see how to swap them. With Novaz's iCloud backup or a backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead of setting Sonic up again. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Sonic's help doesn't describe a recovery process for a lost authenticator app. Its separate Password Recovery Tool resets a forgotten password with a code by call or text plus the full number of the payment card on file (Sonic), but the article doesn't say it removes 2-Step Verification.
The route Sonic does publish is its support team (Sonic):
- email support@sonic.com,
- text (833) 836-0300, or
- call (855) 394-0100, from 6am to 10pm Pacific time, seven days a week.
Sonic doesn't say what proof it asks for or how long a reset takes. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
