Freewallet 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Freewallet is a crypto wallet with a web version and mobile apps. Its two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional and uses an authenticator app. Its help describes no text-message codes and no backup codes. Instead it gives you a Secure 2FA key, and tells you to save it before you finish setup (Freewallet). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Freewallet steps come from Freewallet's own FAQ and blog, linked below. Freewallet's site blocks visitors from the region our reader runs in, so on October 24, 2026 we read the pages as archived copies on web.archive.org, saved between August 2025 and April 2026. The articles themselves were last updated between 2018 and 2022, and they don't all use the same labels. We haven't tested the steps on a Freewallet account, so what you see may differ. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
What 2FA protects in Freewallet
Once the authenticator is linked, Freewallet lets you choose which actions need a code. Its FAQ lists three switches (Freewallet):
- Confirm every login
- Confirm every payout transaction
- Confirm every export of funds
The newer setup articles mention only the first two (Freewallet). Once on, 2FA applies to all your Freewallet apps.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
Freewallet suggests saving the Secure 2FA key and a screenshot of the QR code, kept offline (Freewallet).
In the web version (best for Novaz)
- Sign in to the Freewallet web version and go to Security.
- Select 2-factor authentication. One FAQ page puts it under Security > Account and has you click Begin Setup; the older blog post says Continue (Freewallet, Freewallet).
- Freewallet shows a QR code and the Secure 2FA key. Write the key down now.
- In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the code on your computer.
- Type the 6-digit code from Novaz into Freewallet to finish.
- Choose which actions should ask for a code.
In the mobile app
Freewallet's app articles describe copying the key instead of scanning (Freewallet, Freewallet):
- Open the Freewallet app and go to Settings > Security > 2-factor authentication.
- Tap Begin setup. You'll see the key and a QR code. Copy the key.
- In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually. Enter Freewallet as the Service and paste the key as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Go back to Freewallet, enter the validation code from Novaz, and pick the login or payout option.
Freewallet's help doesn't say how often its codes change. A key typed by hand gives you 6 digits every 30 seconds. Novaz also needs a typed key of at least 16 characters. If the codes don't work or Novaz doesn't accept the key, take a screenshot of the QR code in the app and add it with + > Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
Your key is the backup
Freewallet's help doesn't mention backup or recovery codes. Its answer to a lost phone is the same key and QR code you saw at setup: Freewallet says they can be used again, so you can add the account to a new device or even a different app (Freewallet).
That matters with Novaz, because unless you turn on iCloud backup or export a backup file, Novaz keeps its keys only on your iPhone. Store the Secure 2FA key off your phone, in a password manager or on paper. Anyone with the key can make your codes, so guard it like a password. Freewallet's blog is blunt that once 2FA is on, signing back in takes your password plus the app's code, with "No other options" (Freewallet).
If Freewallet rejects your code
Freewallet's FAQ doesn't cover rejected codes. Check the iPhone's clock first: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, restore it on the new iPhone with Restore from iCloud or Import from file…. Without one, add the account on the new iPhone with the saved Secure 2FA key (or the QR code screenshot), check that the codes work, and only then remove it from the old phone. In Novaz, open the account and tap Remove account. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
- You saved the key or QR code: set up Novaz again on any iPhone with it, as above, and sign in with the new codes (Freewallet).
- You didn't: Freewallet's Web Wallet article says to contact Support if you lose the 2FA code or the app, through its ticket form (Freewallet). The help doesn't say what proof Support asks for or how long a reset takes.
If the phone itself is gone and you have no other device, Freewallet also offers to suspend the account (Freewallet). More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Turning 2FA off
Freewallet's FAQ says you can turn each of the login, payout and export confirmations on or off after setup (Freewallet). It doesn't describe how to unlink the authenticator completely.
