Neopets 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Neopets is the virtual pet site where you keep your pets, items and Neopoints. Before you look for its two-factor authentication (2FA) setting, check how you sign in, because Neopets has two of them:
- NeoPass is the newer login that covers Neopets.com and the other Neopets games. New players can only sign up through NeoPass, and once you link an older account to it, your NeoPass login replaces the old username and password (Neopets, Neopets).
- The classic Neopets login is the username and password that older players can still use without NeoPass. It has its own 2FA page on neopets.com (Neopets).
Both use a code from an authenticator app, and 2FA is optional in both. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Neopets steps come from the NeoPass and Neopets help centers, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. Their pages block automated visits, so we read the same articles through the help centers' public article feed. We haven't tested them on a Neopets account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA in NeoPass
NeoPass describes these steps (Neopets):
- Sign in to NeoPass and open Settings in the top menu, then the Security tab. (Another NeoPass article calls Security a top menu item, so the layout may differ slightly.)
- In the Two-factor authentication section, click Set Up.
- NeoPass shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code. If the code is on your iPhone's own screen, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- NeoPass also offers a "manual setup key" (Neopets). To use it, tap +, then Enter key manually in Novaz, and paste it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Type the 6-digit code from Novaz on the NeoPass page to switch 2FA on.
NeoPass asks for the code after your password, and also after a Facebook or Apple sign-in (Neopets). Its help doesn't mention backup codes for NeoPass.
Turn on 2FA for a classic Neopets login
- On neopets.com, open the account settings page and choose 2-Factor Authentication. The direct address is www.neopets.com/prefs_2fa.phtml (Neopets).
- Enter your password and select Enable 2FA.
- Follow the steps on screen. Neopets' help doesn't describe them, but scanning the QR code with Scan QR code in Novaz is the usual route.
- Save the emergency backup codes Neopets gives you (below).
From then on, every sign-in asks for your username, your password and a 6-digit code from the app (Neopets).
Neither help center says how often the codes change. Scanning the QR code is the safer choice, because it passes the code settings to Novaz.
Classic emergency backup codes
The classic login gives you six one-time codes, 8 digits each. They work differently from most backup codes (Neopets):
- To use one, click Use Emergency Backup Code at the bottom of the 2FA prompt.
- Using a code turns 2FA off. Neopets then offers to set it up again. If you skip that, 2FA stays off until you turn it back on.
- Turning 2FA back on creates new codes, and the old ones stop working.
- You can make a fresh set from the preferences page at any time.
- Neopets suggests not keeping all six codes in one place.
Unless you've turned on iCloud backup or exported a backup file in Novaz, its keys exist only on your iPhone, so these codes are what gets you in if that phone is gone. More in 2FA backup codes.
If Neopets rejects your code
The classic help reminds you that the code keeps changing, so type the newest one (Neopets). If fresh codes still fail, check the iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Moving to a new iPhone
With Novaz's iCloud backup or a backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone and keep the same codes. Without one, turn 2FA off with the old phone and set it up again on the new one. In NeoPass, click Disable 2FA in the Two-factor authentication section; you may need to pass a check if your session has been idle. Setting it up again gives you a new QR code, and the old codes stop working (Neopets). On a classic login, the 2FA page asks for your password and a current code before Disable 2FA, and a backup code won't do (Neopets). See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
- Classic login: sign in with an emergency backup code, then set 2FA up again on your new phone.
- NeoPass, or no backup codes left: contact Customer Service. NeoPass asks you to submit a 2FA reset request, and its team checks your identity first (Neopets). The classic help also sends you to a support ticket (Neopets).
Neopets doesn't list what proof a 2FA reset needs. Its general account recovery policy asks for things like redeemed prize code details, NeoCash or Premium receipts from your payment provider, and every email address the account has used. It doesn't accept ID documents or gameplay screenshots (Neopets). No time is given for a reset. In a November 2025 post, Neopets reported average ticket times of roughly 17 to 71 hours, depending on the month (Neopets). More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
