Sketch 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
Your Sketch account is what you sign in with on the Sketch Mac app and the web app. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional, and Sketch has one method: a code from an authenticator app after your email and password, with recovery codes as the fallback (Sketch).
The setting belongs to your account, not to a Workspace, so turning it on once covers every Workspace you're in. In a Workspace with single sign-on (SSO), your company's identity provider handles the check instead (Sketch).
This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Sketch steps come from Sketch's own documentation and support pages, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Sketch account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
Sketch's documentation, last updated April 7, 2026, warns that some instructions may not match its new interface yet, so labels may differ a little (Sketch).
- Sign in to Sketch on the web and open your account settings. Sketch's docs say to select Account in the account menu at the bottom left of the sidebar; the 2FA steps link straight to sketch.com/settings.
- Click Enable 2FA….
- Click Scan QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- If you can't scan it, click the Or type in the code link under the QR code to see the key as text. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, type Sketch as the Service, and paste or type the key as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Click Enter Verification Code and type the current code from Novaz. If it's about to run out, wait for the next one.
- Sketch then shows your recovery codes. Save them before you leave the page (next section).
Sketch's pages don't say how many digits its codes have or how often they change. Scanning the QR code is the safer way, because the code carries those settings into Novaz.
Save your recovery codes
A recovery code takes the place of the app code when you sign in. Each one works only once (Sketch). Sketch lets you print the list, save it as a PDF, or copy it.
Unless you've made a Novaz backup, its keys exist only on your iPhone, so these codes are your way back in. Store them somewhere else, such as a password manager or on paper. More in 2FA backup codes.
If you've used some up or can't find them, go back to your account page while you're signed in and click Generate New in the 2FA section. The old codes stop working as soon as you do (Sketch).
Signing in with an older Mac app
This is the unusual part. Sketch versions before 82 don't show a box for the 2FA code at sign-in. You can still use 2FA with them: type your password with the current code from Novaz added straight onto the end, with no space in between (Sketch). So a password of blue-sky and a code of 482913 would go in as blue-sky482913.
On version 82 and later, and on the web, you get a separate screen for the code after your email and password.
If Sketch rejects your code
Sketch's pages don't cover rejected codes. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. On an older Mac app, check that you added the code to the end of your password, not the start. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
Sketch doesn't describe moving 2FA to a new phone. With Novaz's iCloud backup or a backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone and the codes keep working. Without one, while the old phone still works, turn 2FA off and on again with the steps above, scanning the new QR code on the new iPhone. You'll get new recovery codes too. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
- You still have your recovery codes: sign in with your email and password, and enter one recovery code where Sketch asks for the app code. Then generate fresh codes and set up 2FA again on your new phone (Sketch).
- You've lost the codes too: contact Sketch's Customer Support team through the contact form. Sketch says Support will turn off 2FA for you, and you can then sign in with your email and password and turn it on again (Sketch). The form asks for the email address linked to your Sketch account.
Sketch's pages don't say what proof Support asks for or how long it takes. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Turning 2FA off
In the 2FA section of your account page, click Disable 2FA…, type your password, and confirm with Disable 2FA. You can turn it on again at any time (Sketch). Then open the Sketch account in Novaz and tap Remove account.
