SmartSurvey 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app
By the Novaz team · Updated October 29, 2026
Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5
On this page
Your SmartSurvey account holds your surveys, contact lists and every response people send in. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional, and it isn't on every plan. SmartSurvey's security page says it's for paid accounts, not the free Basic plan (SmartSurvey). Paid accounts can use an authenticator app; text-message codes are an extra option only on Enterprise plans (SmartSurvey). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. SmartSurvey's help names Google Authenticator and Authy, but Novaz or any other authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the SmartSurvey steps come from SmartSurvey's own help center and security page, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a SmartSurvey account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Before you start
- Plan: if you're on Basic, you won't be able to turn this on until you upgrade (SmartSurvey).
- SSO accounts: some organizations on Enterprise Plus sign their people in through single sign-on, with the company's own credentials (SmartSurvey). SmartSurvey's pages don't say whether its own 2FA applies to those sign-ins, so ask your IT team first.
- Device check by email: separate from 2FA, SmartSurvey asks you to verify each device you sign in from with a link it emails you. It allows two devices per account and up to 10 device switches a year (SmartSurvey). Don't mistake that email link for the 2FA step.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
SmartSurvey's help article describes this flow (SmartSurvey):
- Sign in at app.smartsurvey.co.uk, on a computer if you can.
- Click your portrait in the top right and open My Account.
- In the menu on the left, under the security options, choose Two-factor Authentication.
- Click Enable for Authenticator App.
- SmartSurvey shows a large QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the iPhone's camera at the screen. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Once Novaz has added the account, click Next Step in SmartSurvey.
- Type the current code from Novaz into the box and click Next Step again.
- Enter your SmartSurvey password to finish. That links the account to your authenticator app.
SmartSurvey's article doesn't mention a text key you could type instead of scanning, so plan on scanning the QR code. If you do find one on the setup screen, tap + in Novaz, then Enter key manually, and paste it as the Setup key. More on that in What is a 2FA setup key?
Signing in afterwards
You'll enter your email address and password as usual, then the code Novaz shows for SmartSurvey (SmartSurvey, SmartSurvey). The help doesn't describe a way to skip the code on a trusted device.
If you link a Google account to an existing SmartSurvey account, SmartSurvey asks for your password and a 2FA check before it completes the link (SmartSurvey).
No backup codes in the help
SmartSurvey's help doesn't mention backup or recovery codes, and doesn't say how to get back in without your authenticator. So unless you've backed up Novaz with iCloud backup or a backup file, the iPhone with Novaz is your only key. If you also have an Enterprise plan, adding SMS as a second method gives you another way in, though SmartSurvey doesn't say whether the two can be on together.
If SmartSurvey rejects your code
SmartSurvey's help has no advice on rejected codes. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock: go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
SmartSurvey doesn't describe moving 2FA to a new phone. With Novaz's iCloud backup or a backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone and the codes keep working. Otherwise, with both phones in hand, the documented steps still get you there: turn 2FA off with a code from the old phone (below), then turn it on again and scan the new QR code with the new phone. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
SmartSurvey doesn't document a self-service recovery for a lost authenticator. Its support article says that if you can't sign in and so can't open a ticket, you can email support@smartsurvey.co.uk instead (SmartSurvey). It doesn't say what proof support asks for or how long a reset takes, so write from the email address on your account and include your account number. SmartSurvey only shows that number while you're signed in, under your portrait menu (SmartSurvey), so note it down now. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
Turning 2FA off
Go back to My Account > Two-factor Authentication and click Disable next to Standard Authentication. SmartSurvey asks for your password and a code from your app; then click Disable 2FA (SmartSurvey). The help calls the app method Authenticator App when you turn it on and Standard Authentication when you turn it off, so look for either name. After that, open SmartSurvey in Novaz and tap Remove account.
