Spaceship 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5

Your Spaceship account holds the domains you register or transfer to Spaceship, plus any hosting or Spacemail you buy there. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional: Spaceship doesn't say it's required for anything.
Spaceship has no help article that walks through the authenticator-app setup. Its release notes and blog do say where 2FA lives (the Security Center app in your Launchpad) and which methods it offers: codes from an authenticator app (TOTP), security keys or biometrics (U2F), and backup codes for the authenticator app (Spaceship, Spaceship). Text-message codes aren't one of them: in a post on email security, Spaceship's blog says "TOTP is only allowed by an authenticator app" (Spaceship).
This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Spaceship details come from Spaceship's own release notes, blog and security page, linked below. Spaceship's site blocks automated access, so we read those pages in archived copies on web.archive.org on October 19, 2026. Spaceship doesn't show the authenticator-app screens anywhere, and we haven't tested them on a Spaceship account, so expect some labels to differ. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
- Sign in at spaceship.com and open your Launchpad.
- Open the Security Center app (Spaceship).
- Go to Two-factor authentication. Spaceship's notes only describe the security-key option there: select Set up next to Device authentication – U2F (Spaceship). They don't name the authenticator-app (TOTP) option, so pick the one that mentions an app or TOTP.
- If Spaceship shows a QR code, open Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If it's on your iPhone's own screen, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- If you get a text key instead, tap +, then Enter key manually, and type it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Type the current code from Novaz if Spaceship asks for one to confirm.
Spaceship's pages don't say how many digits its codes have or how often they change. So scan the QR code if you're offered one: it tells Novaz the code settings, while a typed key always gets 6-digit codes every 30 seconds.
Save your backup codes
Spaceship added backup codes for authenticator-app 2FA in July 2023, for the day you lose your phone. You copy and store them yourself, and you can make new ones in the Security Center (Spaceship). Spaceship doesn't say how many you get or whether new codes cancel the old ones.
If you haven't made a Novaz backup, its keys exist only on your iPhone, so these codes are your way back in. Keep them away from the phone. More in 2FA backup codes.
When Spaceship asks for a code
With 2FA on, Spaceship says it asks for two forms of verification every time you sign in (Spaceship). Separately, a sign-in that looks suspicious, such as from a new device, triggers a verification email.
Spaceship also offers passkeys, set up in the same Security Center app, and says you can keep signing in with a password and 2FA if you prefer (Spaceship). It doesn't say whether a passkey sign-in also asks for your authenticator code.
Spacemail has its own 2FA
You sign in to a Spacemail mailbox separately, in webmail, and it has its own Security Center with its own 2FA, by TOTP or security key (Spaceship). The path is the settings cog at the top right, Launch security center, then the TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION tab (Spaceship). Protect both and you'll have two entries in Novaz.
If Spaceship rejects your code
Spaceship gives no advice on rejected codes. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock: open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
Spaceship doesn't describe how to move the authenticator app to a new phone, or how to turn 2FA off. Its 2FA settings are in the Security Center, which you reach only once signed in, so switch while you still have the old phone. With Novaz's iCloud backup or a backup file, you can restore Spaceship on the new iPhone; without one, you'll set Spaceship up again there. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Sign in with one of your backup codes, then set up the authenticator app again on your new phone and make fresh codes.
Without them, Spaceship's pages don't describe a way back in. Its general support contacts are support@spaceship.com and chat (Spaceship). Its security page adds that front-line support staff have limited access to your private details and product settings, to stop social engineering (Spaceship). Spaceship doesn't say whether support can remove 2FA, what proof it asks for, or how long that takes.
