ViaBTC 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

ViaBTC is a crypto mining pool. Your ViaBTC account holds your mining accounts and sub-accounts, your earnings, and the addresses your coins are paid out to, so it's worth protecting. ViaBTC's two-factor options are a phone number for SMS codes and what it calls Google Authenticator, which is a standard time-based code that any authenticator app can produce (ViaBTC, ViaBTC). It isn't required, but ViaBTC recommends binding it right after you sign up (ViaBTC).
The thing to know before you start: ViaBTC doesn't hand out backup codes. Instead it shows you the 16-character key behind your codes and asks you to keep a copy. That key is your way back in. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the ViaBTC steps come from ViaBTC's own help center articles and the screenshots in them, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. The article pages block automated readers and the archived copies weren't reachable that day, so we read the same articles through the help center's public article feed on support.viabtc.com. We haven't tested the steps on a ViaBTC account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
These steps follow ViaBTC's setup article and its screenshots (ViaBTC):
- Sign in at www.viabtc.com and open Settings in the top-right corner, then Account Setting. A September 2026 article reaches the same page through Account Management > Account Settings, so the menu names may differ for you (ViaBTC).
- Under Account Security, find Google Authenticator and click Setup.
- Confirm it's you. If a phone number is on the account, enter the SMS code and click Yes. If not, enter the code ViaBTC emails you and click Next.
- ViaBTC asks you to download Google Authenticator. You can use Novaz instead. Click Next.
- The Bind Google Authenticator window shows a QR code with the key underneath and a Copy link. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. On the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead (scanning a QR code on the same iPhone).
- To type the key instead, tap +, then Enter key manually in Novaz. Put ViaBTC in Service and the key in Setup key. ViaBTC's codes are 6 digits and change every 30 seconds, which matches what manual entry makes. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Type the 6-digit code from Novaz into GA Code and click Next.
- On the Back up step, write the key down, then click Confirm to finish.
ViaBTC's articles call the same key a Secret Key in one place and a private key in another. It's the one under the QR code.
The key is your backup
The backup screen tells you to write the key on paper and keep it safe, and warns that losing it means sending in documents to reset your authenticator. ViaBTC's first reset method is simply adding the saved key to an authenticator app again, which brings back the same codes (ViaBTC).
Keep the written key even if you use Novaz's backup. Without an iCloud backup or a backup file (Settings › Backup), Novaz's keys exist only on that iPhone, and the written key is what brings your codes back. Keep it away from the phone, on paper or in a password manager.
If you use Google Authenticator as well, ViaBTC asks you to turn off its sync to a Google account, because that sync isn't end-to-end encrypted (ViaBTC). Novaz's optional iCloud backup is end-to-end encrypted through iCloud Keychain, so it isn't the kind of sync ViaBTC warns about.
When ViaBTC asks for a code
Binding the app doesn't by itself mean a code at every sign-in. ViaBTC suggests also turning on the option it calls "2FA while signing in" once the app or a phone is bound (ViaBTC). Its help doesn't say where that switch sits, so look for it on the same Account Setting page.
You'll also type a verification code for security changes, such as changing your email address (ViaBTC), and when you confirm a withdrawal (ViaBTC).
If ViaBTC rejects your code
ViaBTC's FAQ blames a phone clock that's out of sync. On iPhone it says to go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically, or, if it's already on, turn it off and back on after a few seconds (ViaBTC). Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, restore it on the new iPhone and your ViaBTC codes keep working (how to move to a new iPhone). Otherwise, ViaBTC gives two ways to set up the new phone (ViaBTC):
- Add your saved key to Novaz on the new iPhone, using Enter key manually.
- If a phone number is also bound, sign in with an SMS code and click Change under Google Authenticator to bind a new key.
If you lose your authenticator
Start with the saved key, as above. Without it, use Lost Google Authenticator?, which appears after you enter your password and the email code. ViaBTC asks for proof that fits your account, such as email screenshots, deposit or withdrawal records, or mining details: up to 6 images under 5 MB each, plus some written answers (ViaBTC).
ViaBTC reviews the request within 7 working days and unbinds the authenticator if it's approved. Withdrawals are then paused for 48 hours (ViaBTC). If the page tells you to submit a ticket, or you've lost your password too, you have to go through a support ticket instead.
ViaBTC has no phone line or live chat, and its staff won't message you first (ViaBTC). Anyone offering to reset your 2FA in a private chat is a scammer. See also Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
ViaBTC's help doesn't describe turning 2FA off.
