Close is a sales CRM: teams use it to call, email and text leads and to track deals. Its two-factor authentication (2FA) is simple in one way and strict in another. The only second step you can add yourself is a code from an authenticator app. Close says it doesn't offer 2FA over SMS (Close), and its help pages don't mention backup codes. So it's worth knowing the recovery route before you start. This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone, but any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Close steps come from Close's own help center, including the screenshots on its 2FA page, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Close account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Email codes until you add an app

If you haven't set up 2FA, Close may email you a 6-digit code when you log in. Close recommends turning on app-based 2FA in Settings > Account, and says that once you do, it no longer needs to send those email codes (Close).

For many people, 2FA isn't optional. An admin can turn on Enforce 2FA for password sign-in under Settings > Organization > Security. It's off by default. When it's on, members who sign in with a password must set up 2FA before they can get into the organization (Close). Close also notes that 2FA belongs to your user account, so one setup covers every Close organization you belong to.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

  1. Open your Account Settings in Close (Settings > Account).
  2. Under Two-Factor Authentication, click Enable....
  3. A window titled Scan this QR code opens. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen. If you're using Close on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and use Choose a photo instead. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  4. If you can't scan it, Close shows a code below the QR code to enter by hand, with a Copy button. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, type a name such as Close in Service, and paste the code as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  5. Type the 6-digit code Novaz shows into the box and click Verify.

These steps follow Close's help page and its screenshots (Close, Close). Close doesn't say how long each code lasts. Scanning the QR code is the safer choice, because it passes the code settings to your app.

When Close asks for a code

With 2FA on, Close asks for the 6-digit code from your app in four places (Close):

  • when you log in, in the web browser or the desktop app,
  • when you change your password,
  • when you change the email address on your account,
  • when you turn 2FA off.

The code box is labeled Authentication code.

If you sign in with Google, check with your admin. Close's enforcement switch only covers password sign-ins, and its help doesn't say whether a Google sign-in also asks for the app code. Close's Google sign-in page still tells everyone to turn on 2FA, whichever way they log in (Close).

If Close rejects your code

Close's help doesn't cover rejected codes. The most common cause is the iPhone's clock: go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. More in Authenticator code not working?

No backup codes, so plan for recovery

Close's 2FA pages don't mention backup or recovery codes. If your phone is lost and you have no Novaz backup (iCloud backup or a backup file) to restore, you'll need someone at Close or in your organization to reset your 2FA. Two routes are documented:

  • Your admin. Under Settings > Organization > Team Management, an admin opens your actions menu and clicks Reset 2FA. This removes your 2FA, signs you out everywhere and emails you a password reset link. You set a new password, sign in, and set up 2FA again if your organization requires it (Close).
  • Close Support. Admins can't use Reset 2FA on their own account, or for a member who belongs to more than one Close organization. In those cases, and if you have no admin, write to support@close.com (Close).

Close doesn't say what proof Support asks for or how long a reset takes. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Changing phones

Close says a member who can still sign in can update their own 2FA from account settings rather than asking an admin (Close). While you still have the old phone, click Disable, then Enable... again and scan the new QR code with the new phone. You can skip this if you restore a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file on the new iPhone. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

Turning 2FA off

On the Account Settings page, click Disable. Close's 2FA page says it asks for your password and a code from your app. Its Account Settings page mentions only the code (Close, Close). If your organization enforces 2FA, you'll have to set it up again before you can get back in. In Novaz, open the Close entry and tap Remove account once 2FA is off.
