Cloze is a relationship manager that pulls in your email, calendar, calls and contacts, so the account holds a lot of your work. Cloze calls its two-factor authentication (2FA) "2-step authentication", and it offers two ways to get the extra code: a text message or an authenticator app. The text message option needs a paid subscription. The authenticator app works on every plan, including the free one (Cloze). So if you're on the free plan, an app is your only choice.

2-step authentication is optional for most people. On a team with the Cloze Business Platinum plan, an admin can switch on Require 2-Step for a role, and then everyone in that role must have it on (Cloze).

This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Cloze steps come from Cloze's own help center, including the screenshots in its articles, which we read on October 21, 2026. Cloze's main 2FA article was last updated in July 2023. We haven't tested the steps on a Cloze account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app

The setting is under My Account in Cloze's settings, on the web or in the mobile app (Cloze):

  1. Tap More (the ... button). On cloze.com it's in the lower left. In the iPhone or Android app it's in the lower right.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap My Account to open that section, then tap Enable next to 2-step authentication.
  4. A 2-Step Authentication window asks how you want to get the security code. Choose Use an authenticator app, then Next.
  5. Cloze shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If you're setting this up in the Cloze app on the same iPhone, take a screenshot and tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  6. If you can't scan it, tap Setup manually under the QR code to get a key to type. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, and fill in Service (for example, Cloze), Account if you like, and Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key? Scanning the QR code is still the safer route.
  7. Tap Next, type the code from Novaz in the 6-digit code box, and tap Next again.
  8. Cloze shows your backup codes. Save them, then tap Done.

Your 5 backup codes

The last setup screen gives you 5 backup codes. Each one works once, in place of the code from your app. In the settings, a 2-step backup codes line shows how many you have left, with a Reset button next to it (Cloze). Cloze's help doesn't explain what Reset does.

Novaz can back up its keys with iCloud backup or a backup file, but these 5 codes still get you in if the phone is gone and that backup is missing or out of date. Store them away from your phone, in a password manager or on paper. See 2FA backup codes.

Signing in, and passkeys

Once it's on, signing in to Cloze takes your password and a security code (Cloze). Cloze also recommends signing in with a passkey. When you add one under My Account, Cloze asks for your password or your 2-step code first (Cloze). Its help doesn't say whether signing in with a passkey also asks for the authenticator code.

If Cloze rejects your code

Cloze's help has no advice on rejected codes. The usual cause is the iPhone's clock. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when your clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?

Changing phones

Cloze doesn't document moving 2-step authentication to a new phone. If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, restore it on the new iPhone and your Cloze codes keep working. Otherwise, note that Cloze's screenshots show a Disable button next to 2-step authentication once it's on, so you can turn it off and set it up again on the new iPhone while you can still sign in with the old one. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.

If you lose your authenticator

Type one of your backup codes in place of the security code. Once you're signed in, you can use Disable and then Enable to set the app up again on your new phone.

If you're on a Cloze team with the Business Platinum plan, a team admin can turn it off for you. In Team Members, they tick your name, tap the Other icon and choose Disable Two-Step (Cloze).

Cloze's help center doesn't describe a recovery route for an individual account without backup codes, what proof it would ask for, or how long it takes. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning 2FA off

Go back to More > Settings > My Account and tap Disable next to 2-step authentication (Cloze). If your team has Require 2-Step on for your role, you have to keep it on. Once it's off, remove Cloze from Novaz: open the account and tap Remove account.
