Iterable is a customer engagement platform that brands use to run their messaging (Iterable). If you sign in to Iterable with an email address and password, multi-factor authentication (MFA) is mandatory, and there's no switch for it in your settings. Iterable sends you to the setup screen at your first sign-in, or the next one after an admin resets it (Iterable). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.

How we checked this guide: the Iterable steps come from Iterable's own support center, including the screenshots in its articles, which we read on October 20, 2026. We haven't tested them on an Iterable account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.

Who has to use it, and with what

  • Email and password sign-in: MFA is required. Iterable rolled it out to all organizations between July 23 and August 9, 2024, and since then it can't be turned off for individual members (Iterable).
  • Sign in with Google or single sign-on (SSO): Iterable's MFA doesn't apply, because Google or your company's identity provider handles the check (Iterable).

You pick the second factor: an authenticator app or a security key (physical or a passkey). Admins can't force either. There are no text, email, phone-call or push options, and your browser must support WebAuthn and have JavaScript on (Iterable).

Set up the authenticator app at sign-in

From Iterable's enrollment article and its screenshots (Iterable):

  1. On Iterable's login page, enter your email address and select Continue. Enter your password and select Continue again.
  2. On the Keep Your Account Safe screen, choose Google Authenticator or similar. Any authenticator app works. The article's text also calls it Authenticator App, so the label may vary.
  3. The Secure Your Account screen shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If Iterable is open on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
  4. If you can't scan it, select Trouble Scanning?. Iterable shows a code with a Copy code button. Its help calls it a one-time code, but it's the setup key. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually, type Iterable as the Service, and paste the code into Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
  5. Type the current code from Novaz into Enter your one-time code and select Continue.
  6. On the Almost There! screen, save your recovery code (there's a Copy code button), tick I have safely recorded this code, and select Continue.

Iterable doesn't say how many digits its codes have or how often they change, so scan the QR code if you can: it passes those settings to your app.

Your recovery code

The setup screen and Iterable's 2024 release notes describe a single recovery code for when you lose your authenticator; the enrollment article's text uses the plural. Keep it off your iPhone, on paper or in a password manager elsewhere. If you lose the phone without a Novaz backup, this code is your only way back that doesn't depend on an admin. Iterable doesn't say whether it works more than once or how to get a new one. See 2FA backup codes.

Signing in afterwards

Iterable asks for a code on the Verify Your Identity screen every time you sign in with your password. That screen has a Try another method link, but the help doesn't explain signing in with the recovery code.

After you enroll, Iterable may offer Log in Faster on This Device, which lets Touch ID or Face ID stand in for your password. It doesn't skip the code. In Iterable's words, "Biometric authentication is not a replacement for MFA" (Iterable).

If Iterable rejects your code

Iterable's only advice is to enter the code before it expires. If fresh codes still fail, check your iPhone's clock: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. For other causes, see Authenticator code not working?

New phone or lost authenticator

You can't swap your authenticator yourself. If you've lost it, try your recovery code. Otherwise, and whenever you change phones, ask your organization's admin, or a member with the Manage Members permission, to reset your MFA. Iterable's help points you to them, not to Iterable support (Iterable).

The admin goes to Settings > Organization Members, opens the three-dot menu next to your name, selects Reset MFA, and confirms with Reset MFA again. Iterable emails you a setup link; use it or just sign in, and the steps above start over (Iterable). Iterable's help doesn't cover what happens if nobody in your organization can do the reset.

With a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore the Iterable entry on the new iPhone and keep using it; without one, a new phone means a reset. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone and Lost the phone with your authenticator app?

Turning it off

You can't while you sign in with a password. The only way out is for your organization to move you to Sign in with Google or SSO, set by an admin under Settings > Authentication (Iterable).
