Rucenter 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Rucenter (Руцентр, long written RU-CENTER) is the Russian domain registrar and hosting company at nic.ru. Your Rucenter account controls your domains, DNS and payments. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional for an ordinary account and free (Rucenter). If you work in Multi-Access mode, where several people share one contract under different roles, it's required (Rucenter).
There are two methods: a phone check (a call or a text message) and a mobile app. The phone check only works with a Russian number in the +7 format, so for many readers the app is the only choice (Rucenter). This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone; see below for why other apps should work even though Rucenter only names Yandex Key.
How we checked this guide: the Rucenter steps come from Rucenter's own help pages, in Russian and English, linked below, which we read on October 21, 2026. We haven't tested them on a Rucenter account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Which app Rucenter expects
Rucenter's help names only one app, Yandex Key (Яндекс.Ключ), and doesn't say whether others are allowed. But the setup is the standard one for time-based codes: a QR code, with a setup key underneath as a fallback (Rucenter). Apps that read that kind of QR code, Novaz included, should give the same codes, though Rucenter doesn't promise it.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
The Russian help page gives this route (Rucenter):
- Sign in to your personal account (личный кабинет) at nic.ru.
- Go to Аккаунт → Настройки безопасности → Двухфакторная аутентификация.
- Choose the app method. Rucenter's English page calls it via Yandex.Key application (Rucenter).
- Rucenter shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at it. If the page is open on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Can't scan? Rucenter shows a setup key (ключ настройки) under the QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Enter key manually. Type Rucenter as the Service, your contract number as the Account, and the key as the Setup key. Rucenter's own example for the account name uses the contract number, in the form NIC.RU 202306. See What is a 2FA setup key?
- Type the code Novaz shows to confirm the account is yours.
2FA switches on by itself once at least one method is set up and confirmed. You can set up both the app and the phone, and then pick either one when you sign in.
Rucenter's pages don't agree on the menu path. The English page uses Security → Multi-access → My role → Main → Two-factor authentication, and the overview page mentions a Повышение безопасности section (Rucenter). Try those if the first route isn't there.
Rucenter doesn't give the code length or interval, so scan the QR code if you can: it carries those settings to your app.
When Rucenter asks for a code
You get the code step when you sign in to your personal account. 2FA can protect both the administrative password and the more limited technical password (Rucenter). Signing in through Gosuslugi (Госуслуги) or with an electronic signature doesn't skip it: Rucenter runs the 2FA check after that sign-in succeeds (Rucenter, Rucenter).
No backup codes
Rucenter's help doesn't mention backup or recovery codes. Your fallbacks are the phone method, if you have a Russian number, and the paperwork below. Unless you back up Novaz with iCloud backup or a backup file, its keys exist only on your iPhone, so add the phone method too if you can.
If Rucenter rejects your code
Rucenter's help doesn't cover rejected codes. Check your iPhone's clock first: Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when your clock is 15 seconds or more off. More causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones or turning 2FA off
To turn a method off, go back to the same section and choose Отключить (Disable on the English page) next to it. When every method is off, 2FA stops (Rucenter). For a new phone, Rucenter has no separate steps: turn the app method off and set it up again while the old iPhone still works. If you have a Novaz iCloud backup or backup file, you can restore your accounts on the new iPhone instead. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Without the account and the device, Rucenter restores access only through an official written request (Rucenter):
- Individuals and sole proprietors fill in Rucenter's form and send the original by one of these routes: in person at the Rucenter office with your passport (book a visit first), at a regional representative's office, by post with a notarized signature (valid for three months), or by email to password@nic.ru if it's signed with a qualified electronic signature.
- Companies send an official one-page letter that meets Rucenter's rules for letters from organizations, with a copy of the person's passport, pages 2-3 and 5 (Rucenter).
Rucenter may ask for more documents if it doubts the request. It doesn't say how long recovery takes. More in Lost the phone with your authenticator app?
