Tilaa 2FA: how to set up an authenticator app

Novaz steps checked against version 1.0.5

Tilaa is a Dutch cloud hosting company, and your Tilaa account is where you run your virtual servers, snapshots, storage, invoices and team users. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is optional, but Tilaa strongly recommends it (Tilaa). The only method Tilaa's help describes is a time-based code from an authenticator app on your phone. There's no text-message option in its documentation.
Two things set Tilaa apart, and both matter before you start. Its help mentions no backup or recovery codes. And once 2FA is on, you can't switch it off yourself: Tilaa says "2FA can only be disabled by our verification team" (Tilaa).
This guide uses Authenticator App - Novaz on iPhone. Any authenticator app works the same way.
How we checked this guide: the Tilaa steps come from Tilaa's own help center, linked below, which we read on October 24, 2026. The help center's web pages answered our plain requests with a browser check, so we read the articles through the help center's public article feed on support.tilaa.com and compared the 2FA article with an archived copy on web.archive.org from February 15, 2026. Both match the version Tilaa last updated on November 27, 2025. We haven't tested the steps on a Tilaa account, so a label may differ slightly. The Novaz steps are checked against the app, version 1.0.5.
Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app
Tilaa's 2FA article describes these steps (Tilaa):
- Sign in to your Tilaa dashboard at cloud.tilaa.com. Tilaa's articles call it both the Tilaa Cloud Dashboard and MyTilaa.
- Click your name or avatar in the top right corner to open the user menu.
- Select Setup Multi-Factor Authentication.
- Tilaa shows a QR code. In Novaz, tap +, then Scan QR code, and point the camera at the screen. If you're signed in to Tilaa on the same iPhone, take a screenshot, tap +, then Choose a photo. See scanning a QR code on the same iPhone.
- Type the 6-digit code that Novaz shows.
- Give the device a name, such as the name of your iPhone, then confirm.
Tilaa's article only describes scanning the QR code. It doesn't mention a text key you can type instead. If the setup screen does show one, you can add it in Novaz with + > Enter key manually and type it as the Setup key. See What is a 2FA setup key?
If several people share a Tilaa account, each colleague should have their own user rather than your password, and Tilaa suggests that new users turn on 2FA straight away (Tilaa). Each user sets it up from their own sign-in.
No backup codes to fall back on
Tilaa's help doesn't say whether setup gives you backup or recovery codes, and it describes no second method. Its article says that losing your phone or deleting the authenticator app locks you out of the account (Tilaa).
That's worth thinking about with Novaz: unless you turn on iCloud backup or export a backup file, its keys exist only on that iPhone. If Tilaa's setup screen does offer recovery codes, save them somewhere away from your phone. Otherwise, your way back in is Tilaa Support (below). See 2FA backup codes for general advice.
When Tilaa asks for a code
Tilaa's help says your account can't be opened without the code from your phone, even by someone who has your password. It doesn't say whether Tilaa remembers trusted devices or asks again for particular actions.
If Tilaa rejects your code
Tilaa's help gives no advice for codes that don't work. The usual cause is the phone's clock. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Novaz also warns you when the clock is 15 seconds or more off. Other causes are in Authenticator code not working?
Changing phones
Tilaa doesn't describe a way to move 2FA to a new phone, and because only its verification team can turn 2FA off, you can't simply switch it off and set it up again. A Novaz iCloud backup or backup file lets you restore your accounts on the new iPhone with the same codes. Without one, keep the old iPhone working and ask Tilaa Support how to move the setup before you wipe it. See How to transfer your authenticator app to a new iPhone.
If you lose your authenticator
Contact Tilaa Support as soon as you can, through the request form on its help center (Tilaa). Its verification team is the only route Tilaa documents for removing 2FA, and you may need to prove who you are before you get access again (Tilaa). Tilaa doesn't list which proof it asks for or how long the check takes.

Turning 2FA off
There's no self-service switch in Tilaa's documentation. To remove 2FA, you ask Tilaa Support, and its verification team does it. After that, you can delete the Tilaa entry in Novaz: open it and tap Remove account.
